As many of you know, I travelled to Uganda over the Christmas period. During my time there, I was fortunate to meet an incredible woman named Penny, who has established a centre in Buhoma, Uganda, to support single mothers.
To give some background: in Uganda, many women have very limited rights. In some communities, husbands hold complete control, and it is not uncommon for women to be punished for disobedience, often with little or no consequence for the men involved.
One heartbreaking example is Faith, a three-year-old little girl I sponsored. Her mother was killed in front of her by her husband using a rock. He served less than one year in prison.
When a husband throws a wife out of the home, the children go with her. The man can then take a new wife and start another family, while the mother is left with no support. Tragically, the wider community often turns its back on these women out of fear that they may “take” their husbands. This is not to say all husbands behave this way, but it is a deeply ingrained cultural issue in some areas.
Penny herself has a powerful story, which you can read at www.smibuhoma.org. Through determination and compassion, she has managed to purchase land to build a safe refuge for these women and their children.
This is where help is urgently needed.
They need to raise $18,000 to build this refuge. I don’t often ask for help, but this cause is incredibly close to my heart, and I am asking for your support to help make this safe haven a reality.
Any donation, no matter how small, would be deeply appreciated. Please also consider sharing this post so we can reach as many people as possible and achieve this goal. Donations can be made directly at the web page www.smibuhoma.org.
Thank you for taking the time to read and for any support you are able to give. ❤️
