New research shows that 95 per cent of Australians lose more than $1,000 when managing a loved one's estate, and half end up more than $10,000 out of pocket.

From trying to access frozen bank accounts to $14,000 funeral costs, the avergae time to settle a deceased estate is more than 12 months.

Experts say a lot of this unnecessary frustration can be resolved with a bit of education and planning.

"It can actually be a really great opportunity to reflect on your life and your legacy... It can really be an act of love," one expert told us.

This week we had the pleasure of being a part of the Smart Steps Downsizing Event hosted by Platinum Realty, and I left feeling incredibly grateful for the wonderful team of professionals we are fortunate to work alongside.
For many people, downsizing is one of the biggest transitions they will make later in life. It's not just about moving house – it's about planning for the next chapter, protecting your interests, understanding your options, and making informed decisions with confidence.
What made this event so valuable was the collaboration between professionals who all play an important role in supporting people through that journey.
Our attendees heard from experts in aged care planning, retirement village contracts, wills and estate planning, financial planning, downsizing real estate, packing and decluttering services, and funding solutions to help prepare a home for sale.
Each presenter brought their own expertise, but the real value comes from working together. When advisers, lawyers, real estate specialists, move managers, and support services collaborate, clients receive more than just advice in one area—they receive coordinated guidance that helps make what can be an overwhelming process feel manageable and achievable.
At Aged Care Solved, we see every day how important it is to have the right people around the table. Whether someone is planning for future aged care needs, considering a retirement village, selling the family home, or helping a parent navigate these decisions, the best outcomes are often achieved when professionals work together with the client's goals at the centre of every conversation.

This story is all too real and accurately reflects the challenges facing our aged care and hospital systems today.

That is why planning your aged care journey, where possible, is so important. While most people hope to remain in their own home for as long as possible, circumstances can change quickly due to illness, injury, or declining health. Having a plan in place for future care needs can make a significant difference during a crisis.

Without planning, difficult decisions may need to be made under pressure by loved ones, often at a time of stress and uncertainty. The more prepared you are, the more choice, control, and dignity you can retain over your future.

Stay proactive and have the conversations early. Be practical about the realities of ageing. Ignoring the issue or putting it off won't make it disappear—it simply reduces your options when the time comes.
