Well that was a crazy year!!
My year started working at Intuit and after 16 years and few months after closing the Edmonton office, I was let go. Instead of playing it safe, I finally took the jump and started the business I had been dreaming about for years.
From there, things moved fast.
I found myself in Costa Rica, walking coffee farms and seeing firsthand the insane amount of work that goes into every cup we drink. Then it was off to Minneapolis for a coffee roasting course. Suddenly this idea in my head was not just an idea anymore. It was happening.
Trailhead went from dream to reality in a matter of months. I officially launched in May, and the very next day I became the sickest I have ever been. Pneumonia took me out for weeks and completely knocked the wind out of my launch. I genuinely thought, is this really how it ends?
At the same time, I was learning the real side of business. How volatile coffee prices are. How quickly a coffee or an entire harvest can disappear. How fast the coffee world can change. One shift can change everything. If you love a coffee, enjoy it while it is here.
Support came from everywhere. Friends, family, and people I had never met before supported me and my dream.I had so many moments that reminded me why I started this in the first place. I will be forever grateful for every one of you.
Somewhere in the chaos, I hiked the West Coast Trail with two of my closest friends. I went on a 3am mountain hike to set up a sunrise café with my son. Countless other hikes. Unexpectedly, I started back at Intuit part time, which quickly turned back into travel again.
And we are just getting started.
The next few months bring
Adventure ready instant coffee
A fully revamped website
An adventure coffee cart
A new idea for coffee on the go
Another West Coast Trail hike to promote the West Coast Trail blend
This year taught me what real hard work feels like. Being a solo business owner is brutal at times, but building something from nothing is everything.
None of this happens without my amazing wife, who somehow supports every crazy idea I come up with.
This was just year one of Trailhead.
I cannot wait to see what is next.
