Shawville has spoken, and the message is loud and clear! Vaughan Bastien has won the Shawville by-election with an impressive 81.5 per cent of the vote, taking Seat 6 on council.

That’s a strong mandate from the community, and we wish Vaughan every success as he gets to work for the residents of Shawville. Thank you to everyone who came out to vote!

At last night’s Council of Mayors meeting, the Warden said she’s pressing the ministry for:

✅ Better communication and advance notice
✅ Adjusted timing on the traffic lights, especially for peak travel directions
✅ A countdown timer, like the one on Highway 148, so drivers know how long they’ll wait
✅ More signage, including warnings for trucks before they reach the bridge
✅ Night supervision at the lights in case they fail

Mayors shared what they’ve been hearing: weekend lineups of up to 100 cars heading back into Quebec, local workers told the bridge would close who took a long detour for nothing, farmers unable to cross with trailers, and two trucks forced to turn around on the bridge after missing the “no trucks” sign.

The work is expected to continue into November, and some mayors raised concerns it could carry into spring.

The Warden says she’ll share an update once she hears back from the MTQ.

👉 Have you been caught in the lineup? Tell us your experience in the comments, and share this so others can plan their crossing.

Brady Tkachuk is back in Ottawa, and Sens fans made sure he heard about it. 🏒

The former captain was booed every time he touched the puck in his first game at Canadian Tire Centre since asking for a trade to Florida this summer. Fans drowned out his video tribute, taped X’s over the C on their jerseys, and chanted “You betrayed us!” from the opening shift.

Tkachuk didn’t seem to mind. He waved, grinned, and scored on the power play in the first period.

Were you booing or cheering? Tell us in the comments. 👇

A 23-year-old man from Welland, Ontario, has died after a canoe capsized on Lac à la Truite in La Pêche on Friday afternoon.

MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police say four people were in the canoe while fishing, about 20 metres from a cottage, when it tipped just after 3 p.m. No one on board was wearing a lifejacket. Three people made it to shore. The fourth did not.

Officers used a boat found on the shore to reach the man, and one officer jumped into the water to try to bring him out. La Pêche firefighters recovered him around 4 p.m. Resuscitation was attempted, but he was pronounced dead at the Wakefield hospital.

Police say there is no evidence of anything criminal. A coroner has been assigned.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

A reminder as we head into late fall: the water is very cold right now, and cold water can overwhelm even strong swimmers within minutes. Please wear a lifejacket every time you’re on the water, even for a short paddle close to shore.

The Pontiac’s own Todd Kline took top prize Saturday at Pumpkinfest in Wellington, Prince Edward County, closing out his season with a third first-place finish.
His winning pumpkin tipped the scales at 1,957 pounds, a new personal best, and earned him $2,000. Earlier this month, Todd also took first place in Port Elgin and Woodbridge, making it three wins across Ontario this year.
Todd’s love of growing started right here at home. He has been growing giant pumpkins and other produce since 1989, and got his start showing vegetables at the Shawville Fair before a couple of local growers handed him his first pumpkin seeds. Today his giants measure about five and a half feet across and weigh as much as a small car.
Congratulations, Todd! The whole Pontiac is proud of you.

Shawville’s new mayor takes his seat
Richard Armitage presided over his first council meeting as mayor of Shawville on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Armitage, who previously held council seat four, was acclaimed as mayor. Christopher Hobbs was acclaimed to Armitage’s former seat and also joined the council table Tuesday.
One seat is still empty, and that one goes to the voters. Vaughan Bastien and Patricia (Trish) Reid are running for council seat six in a byelection.
🗳️ Advance voting: Sunday, Oct. 18, noon to 8 p.m.
🗳️ Election day: Sunday, Oct. 25, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School, 89 Centre Street
The shakeup on council began in July, when then-mayor Bill McCleary resigned less than a year into his second term, citing difficulties with the new council. Councillor Katie Sharpe followed on Sept. 2, stepping down to become the new director general of the Municipality of Bristol.

Shawville’s outdoor rink is getting a new home
After repeated vandalism forced its dismantling, the outdoor rink is moving to Pontiac High School.
Council has agreed to relocate it to PHS at no cost to the school, with the goal of having it ready for skaters this winter. The move still needs approval from the Western Quebec School Board.
Here’s what we know:
🔧 The town is covering repairs from the dismantling, including welding on broken brackets and replacement boards.
💰 Any further costs the school requests will go back to council for approval.
🤝 The goal is a partnership between PHS, Clarendon and the Shawville and District Recreation Association.
