How I Lost 50 Birds in 3 Days

Last year, I was excited—my broilers were 4 weeks old, growing fast, and looking healthy. I had big plans for them.

But one morning, I walked into the pen and saw 3 dead birds. The next day—15 more. By day 3, over 50 were gone.

I was heartbroken.

Their necks were twisted, wings drooping, and some had greenish p**p. I had no idea what was happening—until a vet told me: Newcastle Disease.

I had skipped vaccination. A costly mistake.

INVESTING WON'T MAKE YOU RICH

You want to argue, right?

I know.

I've been telling you to invest your money.

Don't worry, it is still me.

And if you don't invest, you will still end up poor.

But will investing make you rich?

Let's consider a typical investment.

Real estate.

You buy a house for 150 million CFA, and put it up as a rental property.

Sound investment, right?

Yes.

Okay.

So how much do you take as rent in a year?

12 million CFA.

Okay, how many percent of 150 million, is 12 million CFA?

Just 8%.

So you are earning 8% return on investment every year.

So look at it.

The man that has 150 million to buy such a piece of real estate is already rich.

But since you are not rich yet, let's look at a typical amount you can start with.

100 thousand CFA.

By the way, for context, 100 thousand CFA is less than 100 dollars.

No I didn't say 1,000 dollars.

I said 100 dollars.

So if you are not from Nigeria, and you are reading this, I just added that context so you can understand better.

Now, imagine that you invest your own 100,000CFA at the same 8% per year.

By the end of the year, how much will you make?

You will make just 8,000CFA.

The question now is, how many 8,000CFA per year will you make before it will make you rich?

Let's go deeper.

Investors use compound interest to increase their money and get richer.

So let's say you are earning 8% per year consistently.

Using the rule of 72, which is the rule that investors use to calculate how long it will take before their money doubles, look at it.

It will take 72÷8 years to double.

That means it will take 9 nine for your capital to move from 100,000CFA to 200,000CFA.

That is assuming that no challenges arise during that period that causes you to lose any part of that 8%.

So the question is, do you want to spend nine years trying to turn 100,000 naira into 200,000 naira?

The answer is No!

So we employed a new security man at the plaza. His duty was to monitor the security of the properties we had and to ensure they were safe at all times.

Three days ago, a fibroid tea which we were to deliver to a customer at her office was delayed because the Delivery guy called to inform us that he had a flat tire and would be late for some minutes.

I looked outside and saw the security man sitting idle outside the office and I called him.

"Security."

He looked at me, stood up, and ran over.

"Ehen Oga Victor, I wanted to tell you something."

"What is it?"

"This security you are always calling me is making me feel like I am a Bingo, or police dog. Can you call me gate man? Where I worked before that is what they called me. Gate man."

"I should call you gate man?"

"Yes sir. Security no dey too sweet me like that. E sound like say I hold gun or something. Na stick them give me when I resume work for here o."

I laughed.

"Alright. Gate man. I will call you gate man."

"Thank you, sir. Na my work be that. I dey gate."

"Okay. So the delivery guy isn't coming today. Can you run a small delivery for the price? You just need to deliver this to a woman close by. It is not compulsory o. Just for a small token."

He smiled.

"Yes sir. Where is the place?"

"I told him."

He now looked at my car.

"I dey go with your car?"

Haaa.

My mouth opened.

"My car keh! You will enter a taxi."

"Yes sir. Don't mind me."

I chuckled.

When I handed him the package.

He hurriedly turned to leave.

I then asked him.

"Ehen so now you are delivering goods for VianceTea, should I still call you gate man?"

"God forbid. Rank don increase."

"So what should I call you?"

He paused and looked up for a moment.

"Kai Oga till I come. The name combination is hard. Sharp Sharp Delivery LTD. Something like that, sir. I am coming."
