This isn’t what July is supposed to look like.

At this time of year, our cows would normally be out enjoying fresh, green grass. Instead, they’re being fed silage—the forage we usually save for winter—because the fields have stopped growing.

With so little rain and prolonged high temperatures, grass growth has almost come to a standstill. It’s another reminder of how quickly our climate is changing and how farming is having to adapt.

The work doesn’t stop. The cows still need feeding, the cubicles still need cleaning, and every day brings another challenge. Behind every bottle of milk is a huge amount of care, planning and resilience.

We’re incredibly proud of our team and our cows, and we’ll keep doing everything we can to care for them, whatever the weather.

Let’s hope for some rain soon. 🌧️🐄🌱

Today we joined the Cotswold Fosse farming group for a brilliant visit to Badderton Common, near Bath.

We explored the incredible wildflower meadows and learnt how the seed is carefully harvested before being spread onto other sites with similar soil types, helping to create even more species-rich meadows. It’s such a simple but powerful way of restoring biodiversity.

One of the highlights was seeing so much yellow rattle. My son absolutely loved collecting the seed and was thrilled to bring some back to Hill End Farm. We’re excited to see if we can establish it here too.

It was lovely to catch up with Victoria Nye and spend the day with so many people who genuinely care about ecology, conservation and the future of farming.

A huge thank you to Harry Long for organising such an inspiring event. Harry is doing an incredible job bringing farmers together, sharing knowledge about sustainable farming and helping people access opportunities to make a real difference.

Days like today remind us that farming and nature really can thrive together. 🌼🌾🐝

And all the things that I didn’t have time to say like: the heat will reduce fertility. if a Cow calves in this heat then she will be an energy deficit. Her colostrum will not be as good and the calf will not thrive as well. The heat will affect the calf developing inside the Cow. having to feed the cows. The winter Silage means we will have less Winter Feed available for the cows at a time when the extreme heat is causing the grass not to grow so we cannot produce as much Silage.

A little experiment from the dairy kitchen… 🧀✨

My new experimental feta-style cheese has had its first starring role — wrapped in dry-cured smoked bacon and baked until golden, then paired with a sticky fig, honey & chilli sauce.

The salty, creamy tang of the cheese with the smoky bacon and sweet heat of the sauce is a match made in heaven.
