End of a short era. announced she was closing on Friday. ☹️ Beatties has been the starting point for several Holmfirth tapas trails and we’ve been there for lunch, elevenses etc at other times too. We had to visit while we could and to say goodbye so went today with a couple of friends we often go on the HTT with. I had to have pork pie in pea and ham soup with mint sauce. On the walk home we went through the woods I found some wild raspberries, not many, but very tasty.

Had a busy week and Saturday was taken up making cocktails, so fire cooking day was Monday. Mr MCWF found some Barnsley chops in the freezer and we picked up some sweetcorn when shopping. I made some mint sauce with our own mint.

Cooked on my new (which is an early birthday present 😁)

Also finished off making my beech leaf noyau and made some fig leaf liqueur.

A group of 13 of us (only 3 of which I’d met before) embarked on a cocktail making course. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the whole thing was hilarious. We started with making spritz, which involved one of us standing behind the other as ‘the arms’ telling told by the one in front of being ‘the eyes’. Much spillage for some pairings, but I think our pairing did good. Second was a martini (raspberry and passion fruit in our case) and he decided we should race in pairs, then suggested a forfeit for the loser. Forfeit being a shot of lemon juice. At this point I stared him in the eye, picked up a lime wedge and ate it. Not sure if he felt shocked or defeated. I offered to take the forfeit for my partner regardless who won and she was more than happy to accept. Last was a mojito which we made ourselves. Instructions to me ‘put 3 slices of lime in the glass’. Readers, a 4th went in.

Ms Bs birthday this weekend so she’s home to celebrate, (also to see the duck race and art week). She requested her favourite, Taco Al Pastor, so that’s what I cooked. Served with a pineapple, pepper, onion, lime and basil salsa (hers was without onion as she’s not a fan) and yoghurt. The rind went on the grill for crackling. She’s been in charge of her own birthday cake for years and this year was no exception. Lemon drizzle with raspberries, covered with a white chocolate ganache, which was obviously delicious.

A bit of a tour around the garden to check on things. Our fig tree has decent sized figs on it (for the first time ever, but it has been sat in a pot for years and only recently got planted). We have raspberries and blackcurrants. Plus a few flowers, in including a very lovely water lily. The pink rose is a cutting I took from a rose we had in our last house. It grew really well and always had lots of flowers with a strong scent of Turkish delight. I’m so glad the cutting grew, so now we get to have it here as well.
I hold no responsibility for having a red rose in the garden, it was there already.

A yoghurt vs oil test yesterday on the . Lots of chicken thighs that needed cooking, so I decided to figure out once and for all which is better for marinading.
I made exactly the same spice mix of garlic, ginger, chilli flakes, turmeric, garam marsala, fenugreek, cumin and coriander, then mixed some with yoghurt and some with oil, plus a solitary piece of chicken just got oil, lemon juice and S&P (basically so the cats could have some).
We decided that yoghurt wins, and weirdly, found out that it takes longer to cook than the oil based marinade. Who knew!?
Obviously the cats enjoyed theirs, to the point they ended up eating most of one thigh between them and didn’t want their tea. We did also have some and actually thought it tasted pretty good anyway.

It’s the last Thursday of the month therefore it must be Holmfirth Tapas trail. First spot as usual was Beatties, where I had the Toad in the hole and then pork pie with pea and ham soup, Mr B had a deli plate followed by a mini ploughman’s (which I didn’t take a Picture of 🙄).
We usually move after one plate to somewhere else for our second, but this time we were quite happy talking with a friend so had two here instead.
Pudding was ice cream from Dixons on the way home, coconut and chocolate chip for me, which was really coconutty (this is a good thing).

Hottest day so far and we decided to walk on Ilkley moor because Mr B wanted to look at the badger stone. Upside was lunch at Bettys followed by a gooey rascal ice cream (which I shouldnt but I did and yet again I don’t care plus I took lactase).
