A slower Thursday doesn’t mean we stop creating… 🌿

Today it’s all about harvesting our homegrown gooseberries, Cucumbers and making another batch of our handmade lip balms. From garden to workshop, there’s always something happening behind the scenes The George Castleton.
(We even Laser engrave the tins ourselves, why wouldn’t we 😂)

It’s these quieter days that let us make the things that make us different. 💚🍈

🌱 Fresh from the garden! 🌱

One of the best parts of growing our own is harvest day. 🥒🍓🌶️

Today’s pick includes crisp cucumbers, sweet strawberries, gooseberries, redcurrants, broad beans, peppers, courgettes and fragrant herbs – all grown with care and harvested at their very best.

Many of these will be making their way straight into our kitchen, proving that nothing beats the flavour of truly fresh, homegrown produce. 💚

One of the things we love most about our kitchen garden and no-dig allotment is simply watching it all grow.

What started as a few raised beds and plenty of trial and error has evolved year after year into something we’re incredibly proud of. People often see the photos and think it must be hard work, but the truth is that, like anything, if you take the time to learn what works and what doesn’t, it gets easier and easier.

Every season teaches us something new. We’ve changed layouts, improved growing methods, added infrastructure and learned from our mistakes. Those little improvements soon add up and make a huge difference.

This year we’re particularly pleased that the watering system is now fully in place. If we get another summer as hot as last year, we’re ready for it. Less time carrying watering cans means more time enjoying the garden and focusing on growing great produce for the pub.

We’re also very lucky to have some fantastic help with the bigger jobs when needed, and we appreciate that support immensely. But it’s the day-to-day time spent amongst the plants, pulling a few weeds, checking on what’s growing and seeing everything develop that we enjoy the most. It’s surprisingly relaxing and a great way to switch off for a while.

From tiny seedlings to baskets of fresh produce, it’s amazing to look back and see how far the garden and allotment have come over the last few years. We can’t wait to see what this growing season brings.

A rare day away from the pub today, spent getting stuck into the kitchen garden. 🌱

All the Hydroponics are up and running and ready for the seeds started late in the garage.

Tomorrow it's back to the allotment before another busy weekend at The George. There's still plenty to do, but we're pleased to say the allotment is now fully planted out. We're just waiting for the 3D printer to finish making some netting pegs before a few final jobs can be ticked off the list!

Everything we grow helps us on our sustainability journey and provides ingredients for dishes, preserves, garnishes and more throughout the year.

If you'd like to see where some of it all starts, we'll be opening our garden as part of the Castleton Secret Gardens event at the end of the month. Come along on the Sunday and have a look around.

It's about protecting whichever pub, café, restaurant or hospitality venue YOU love most.

The reality is stark:
📉 366 pubs couldn’t carry on & closed permanently in 2025.😡
📉 Another 161 pubs have already closed their doors in the first three months of 2026. 🥲

Every closure means lost jobs, lost community spaces and another part of Britain's social fabric disappearing.

Hospitality is one of the UK's biggest employers and one of the most heavily taxed sectors. Yet while many European countries benefit from reduced hospitality VAT rates, UK hospitality continues to pay 20% VAT.
