Did You Know in Newent? The Black Dog has long had a reputation as one of the more haunted pubs in Newent as well as a great range of beers and ciders. As with many old inns, the stories are part local folklore and part oral tradition over 350 years, so they should be viewed as legends rather than verified historical events.
The Lavender Lady
The best-known apparition is known as the Lavender Lady.
According to local tradition, she was a woman who lived in medieval or early modern Newent and earned a living selling bunches of lavender and other fragrant herbs in the town. She is said to appear as a woman dressed in pale or grey clothing, sometimes accompanied by the unmistakable scent of fresh lavender before she is seen.
People have claimed to experience:
• The smell of lavender appearing suddenly in empty rooms.
• A female figure glimpsed on staircases or in upstairs rooms.
• A calm, non-threatening presence that disappears almost immediately.
Unlike many ghost stories, the Lavender Lady is generally described as benevolent rather than frightening. Some versions of the tale suggest she is simply continuing her daily routine centuries after her death.
Charlie the Cavalier
The second famous ghost is Charlie, described as a headless Cavalier.
The story links him to the English Civil War, when the Newent area saw military activity because it lay between the Royalist stronghold of Hereford and the Parliamentarian city of Gloucester.
Legend says Charlie was a Royalist soldier who was either:
• killed in fighting near the inn,
• executed after capture, or
• died from wounds received during the conflict.
His ghost is said to wander without its head, particularly around the older parts of the building and cellar. Reports include:
• Heavy footsteps when no one is present.
• A tall male figure in period clothing.
• Sudden cold spots.
• Doors opening or closing on their own.
There is no historical record identifying a Cavalier called Charlie who died at the pub; the name appears to be part of the later folklore which is enjoyed more with a great beer or two with friends.
