Residents and visitors alike were surprised last night as Achill's latest pub, The Basking Shark Bar, welcomed patrons for the first time. The McNamara family, had maintained secrecy around the new bar's opening date, causing weeks of increasing anticipation.
Choosing to opt for a soft launch, they finally opened their doors last night, catching a few observant individuals off-guard. A steady influx of surprised patrons followed, discovering the new locale either on their casual stroll or intending to visit the adjacent Amethyst Bar which is also owned by the McNamara family. Soon, the news spread like wildfire, and in no time, the bar was bustling with people.
In a conversation with What's on in Achill, Paul McNamara expressed his satisfaction with the initial response, explaining that they chose a subdued launch to ensure smooth operations and help staff familiarise themselves to their new environment.
Among the first patrons were Frank and Maureen Daly from Tuam, regular visitors to Achill with a holiday home here. They intended to visit the Amethyst Bar, owned by the McNamaras as well, but ended up in the new establishment. Frank predicted The Basking Shark Bar to be a top attraction in Achill, while Maureen praised its compact size and warm atmosphere.
Styled like an old-school local pub, The Basking Shark Bar encourages conversation and socialisation, devoid of a TV and a food menu, offering a refreshing and cozy experience.
