How to Maintain Healthy Droppings π
Healthy droppings are one of the best signs that your chickens are doing well. If droppings become watery, green, bloody, or very smelly, it usually means something is wrong with feed, water or health.
Hereβs how to maintain healthy droppings in your flock π
1. Give Clean, Quality Feed
π Poor or spoiled feed is a major cause of abnormal droppings.
Use fresh, well-balanced feed (starter, grower, finisher as appropriate)
Avoid moldy maize or wet feed
Donβt suddenly change feed, do it gradually over 3β5 days
2. Provide Clean Water Always
π Dirty water quickly affects digestion.
Change water at least 1β2 times daily
Wash drinkers regularly
Avoid stagnant or warm water in the pen
3. Use Probiotics or Natural Boosters
π Good gut bacteria = firm droppings.
You can use probiotics (or fermented feed in small amounts)
Garlic or ginger water occasionally can help gut health
Avoid overusing antibiotics, they disturb gut balance
4. Control Stress in the House
π Stress affects digestion and causes loose droppings.
Avoid overcrowding
Ensure good ventilation
Reduce sudden noise or frequent disturbance
5. Maintain Good Hygiene
π Dirty litter leads to infections like coccidiosis.
Keep litter dry (remove wet patches immediately)
Donβt let droppings accumulate in drinker/feed areas
Disinfect the house regularly
6. Deworm and Prevent Diseases
π Internal parasites can cause abnormal droppings.
Deworm at the right age based on your program
Vaccinate properly (especially against Newcastle & coccidiosis prevention where applicable)
7. Watch Feed Composition
π Too much watery greens or poor-quality kitchen waste can loosen droppings.
Use greens in moderation
Ensure feed has enough fiber and protein balance
