Did you know that one of the oldest recorded cookies in history is believed to be Jumble? 🤔🧐
The original name ‘jumble’- refers to the shape. ‘Jumble’ derived from Latin word, ‘gemel’ for ‘twin’, alluding no doubt to twisted strands of dough, and not to the modern meaning of ‘jumble’, which is a mess.
Jumbles is primarily known in a recipe for “Almond Jumballs” in 1694. Then, jumbles were widespread in Europe by the 17th century, but possibly originated in Italy as the ‘cimabetta’. It is a very common cookie for travelers as they were probably brought to America on the Mayflower.
Originally, jumbles were twisted into various pretzel-like shapes and boiled. By the late 18th century, jumbles became rolled cookies that were baked, producing a cookie very similar to a modern sugar cookie, although without the baking powder or other leavening agents used in modern recipes, makes it classified as a diet with a significant amount of sugar. These recipes result in sweets with a somewhat dry texture, making it possible to store them for long periods without any ill effects.
