I had a conversation with someone this week about advocacy, and it's been on my mind ever since.

We tell people all the time, “You need to advocate for yourself.”

But what does that actually MEAN?

How do you advocate for yourself if you grew up in a generation where you didn't question authority figures, especially doctors? Where you went to an appointment, listened to what you were told, and trusted that the person in the white coat knew best?

And what if you've never been taught that it's okay to speak up?

What does advocating for yourself actually LOOK like? What does it SOUND like?

Is it asking questions? Telling your nurse you're in pain instead of "toughing it out"? Asking for ice chips? Saying, “I don't understand. Can you explain that again?” Or asking what your options are before making a decision?

**We tell people to use their voice, but are we teaching them HOW?**

Let's talk about it.

What does advocating for yourself look and sound like to you? What would you tell someone who has never felt comfortable speaking up for themselves?

A little note about last night's Death Cafe. 🖤🫖🍰☠

I don't cancel Death Cafe often. In fact, I can count the times on one hand. Once when my granddaughter was born, once because of snow, and now last night.

I know that those of you who come to Death Cafe are looking for connection, conversation, and a place where you can show up exactly as you are. I never take that for granted. These gatherings are special to me, too.

But sometimes, I'm needed elsewhere. Last night was one of those times.

Thank you to the ones who shared the cancellation and let others know.

I know a few of you still showed up last night and didn't see the cancellation notice. I'M SO SORRY 😭 you made the trip and found an empty space. I know your time matters, and I hate that you were inconvenienced.

I'm just one person👉👈, and occasionally, the work I do means I have to make a difficult choice about where I'm needed most.

Thank you for understanding that I don't cancel these gatherings just because. They matter to me as much as they matter to those of you who attend.

I'll see you at the next one. There will be tea, there will be cake, and there will always be room for a conversation about death. 🖤
