Tuesday Tip: Get your calcium!
Did you know that calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body? It's essential for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth and it allows your muscles to move, nerves to carry messages, and blood to circulate properly.
Because your body cannot produce it, you MUST get calcium from your diet. 99% of your body's calcium is stored in your bones and teeth. Bones act as a "bank". If your diet lacks calcium, your body withdraws it from your bones, causing them to weaken over time and increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
Recommended Intake by Age:
Children (1–3 years): 700 mg
Children (4–8 years): 1,000 mg
Teens (9–18 years): 1,300 mg
Adult Men (19–70 years): 1,000 mg
Adult Women (19–50 years): 1,000 mg
Adults (71+ men; 51+ women): 1,200 mg
How do you make sure you're getting enough? Think about your diet. It's recommended to get your calcium from whole foods rather than supplements, as food sources are processed more naturally by your body.
Dairy products are the richest source: 3 servings per day of milk, yogurt and cheese.
Plant-based sources: Leafy green vegetables (like kale and broccoli), almonds, and calcium-fortified cereals and juices.
Also, vitamin D is crucial because it helps your body absorb calcium. Only a few foods naturally contain vitamin D (like mushrooms), so it's important to consider a supplement.
