Session 16 – 2026 – Oct. 30th, 31st, Nov 1st
Corry RAILS WORK SESSION #16: We are getting close to winding up our Work Sessions as the temperatures drop and we get closer to that first dusting of snow... it's only a matter of days or weeks away and therefore it will be questionable how far into November we will be able to go with our 2026 Sessions. The El Ninos and the jet stream will tell the story there. I can't wait for the day that we are able to finish insulating the building and add a little heat.... all in good time.
This past year has been a bit slow on volunteer participation. We hope that next Season will be better now that we are getting into the woodworking and assembly. The new Boiler is still in progress, but it should be here next Spring.... and we are still topping off our fundraising for that part of the project.
So, once again it is time for Climax and Rail Restoration Fans to gather... Our Volunteers will gather for the 16th time this year to work on tasks involved in the restoration of Climax A-313 built in 1902 for the Nome Alaska Gold Rush... This little locomotive is the ONLY nearly complete Class A Climax survivor known to exist.
Our Timber Trolley is done.... and I am enclosing a couple of photos, and next on the fabrication end is the Forklift Fork Extension boom, for reaching to the center of the frame as we are placing Timbers... in and out and in and out, as they are fit into place... Some more repair fill-welding has been completed too. Thanks Welder Bill.
Our new “U”-bolts for the stake pockets are now here and are looking great... Thanks Ken.
Side Sills are ready for mortises.... Timbers are still in the squaring up stage as we figure this sawmill out... More parts were sand-blasted last week, cleaning up some of the Driveline Coupler Rings, one of which was repaired by Grady... Thanks to Tom Lee and Grady Smith... so you can see the major repairs in the Horn Block recesses.... When we pulled this joint apart there was no No Horn Block to be found... no battered up Block or even any remnant material.... on top of that, the Horns themselves didn't show damage... one of those mysteries of the survival of Climax A-313.... so there will again be some primering to do on those... and paint on other parts that have been waiting. More work to be done on our Timber and Rail Tools Display occurred last session.... and we will try to get to the threading that didn't get done last time.... and the Engine sits waiting for the rest of it to come together.
We are always looking for Volunteers... It is not just about the mechanical and wood-working jobs, but we are still looking for people interested in learning about our project details to be able to act as Docents and Guides when we have visitors, and group tours, and to help staff displays at events.... volunteers to learn about writing Grant Applications and assist with our fund raising efforts... and other tasks... let us know what you would like to do... the sky is the limit... help build our community by volunteering... it helps everyone.
Our Work Weekend Session schedule has changed some from previous years to try to accommodate our Volunteer's availability... some can't come in on Sunday mornings.... some travel on Friday evening and want to be here Saturday and Sunday... some are off on Fridays...and want to be home on Sunday ...so... the new daily schedule is: Friday 9-5, Saturday 9-5, & Sunday 9-12... or 1pm, with lunch on Friday and Saturday. Let us know when you are available.
The lunch on Friday will be either Pizza or sub sandwiches and drinks, and we never know what the ladies may cook up for us on Saturday... last time it was meatball sub sandwiches... yummy... thanks ladies!
Google this address for our location... no numbers on the building, but hard to miss, as it is a pretty large steel building... 132 Mead Ave., Corry, PA. ...drop by and say “Hi!”
