Dumplings are steeped in facts, and it's always good to know more. So we give you............................. the Dumpling files...... You'r welcome.
1. They Were Originally Created as Medicine
According to Chinese legend, the dumpling was invented during the Han Dynasty by a physician named Zhang Zhongjing. During a bitterly cold winter, he noticed many poor villagers suffering from frostbitten ears. To help them, he chopped up mutton, chili, and warming herbs, wrapped them in scraps of dough, and boiled them. He fed these ear-shaped "dumplings" to the villagers to improve their circulation and warm their bodies.
2. They Exist in Almost Every Culture
While often associated with Asian cuisine, the concept of wrapping dough around a filling is a universal culinary phenomenon. Nearly every culture has its own iconic version:
Italy: Ravioli and Gnocchi
Poland: Pierogi
Latin America: Empanadas (which share a similar dough-and-filling concept)
Georgia (Country): Khinkali
Nepal/Tibet: Momos
