Irvington Theater spotlights local solutions to climate change with EarthIrvington, a two-day festival coming to O’Hara Nature Center this October 1-2

IRVINGTON, NY — As autumn approaches and Mother Nature transitions into one of her most glorious seasons, Irvington Theater is proud to once again partner with with the Village’s esteemed O’Hara Nature Center for an outdoor event that uses the arts to promote practical, hyperlocal solutions for protecting the planet.

EarthIrvington is a two-day festival featuring musical performances, film screenings and forums, sustainable eats, and outdoor activities for the whole family. The fun begins on Friday, October 1 with an open-air screening of Wasted! The Story of Food Waste (2017) from Executive Producer Anthony Bourdain (who also narrates) following a Q&A with the documentary’s director, Nari Kye, and a panel of leaders from Westchester County organizations whose missions reflect a commitment to sustainability. Come for the Emmy Award-winning film, stay for the locavore fare from nearby eateries!
The outdoor festivities continue on Saturday, October 2 with guided tours of the Nature Center’s 400+ acres of forested trails, “Ask the Expert” tables, and hands-on workshops designed to empower families with the knowledge and tools to combat a global challenge locally.
The festival concludes later that afternoon with a righteously irreverent performance from Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir, a storied group of satirists and self-identified urban activists who use theater of protest, spectacle, and song to fight for climate justice. “Reverend Billy is zany and energetic enough to hold the attention of those he’s preaching to... long enough for them to consider his crusade” (The New York Times).
EarthIrvington will take place October 1 and 2 at the O’Hara Nature Center, located at 170 Mountain Road, Irvington, NY 10533. Parking is available, but carpooling is encouraged. To purchase tickets (on sale September 13) and view a complete festival lineup, including specific event times, visit irvingtontheater.com/earthirvington.

A model of energy efficient and green design, the O’Hara Nature Center fosters the enjoyment and exploration of the Irvington Woods while demonstrating concepts in sustainability that inspire the community to live in balance with nature.

Irvington Theater is home to a diverse range of innovative programming that entertains, enlightens, and inspires, establishing itself over its 119-year history as the cultural heart of the Rivertowns. Their theater, located inside of Irvington’s Town Hall, remains closed through early 2022 as a much-anticipated HVAC system is installed. Until then, IT will continue to offer a combination of in-person, offsite events and virtual programming as part of .

Help Available for SNAP Recipients to Replace Food Lost During Hurricane Ida

Assistance is available to help Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in New York City, Long Island and Westchester to replace food lost as a result of power outages and flooding caused by Hurricane Ida. Additionally, residents of those communities will be able to temporarily use their SNAP benefits to purchase hot and prepared foods.

The replacement SNAP benefits are limited to all of New York City and to Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties, the areas most severely impacted by the flash flooding on September 1 caused by heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ida.

SNAP recipients whose food has spoiled as a result of flooding, power outages or other damage caused by the storm can receive replacement benefits up to the amount of their August SNAP benefits, including the SNAP emergency allotment, an additional benefit that has ensured SNAP recipients continue to receive the maximum monthly benefit during the pandemic.

Information on how New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Ida can meet their basic needs, including how to apply for SNAP, public assistance and emergency assistance, can be found at: https://www.governor.ny.gov/governors-relief-and-response-resources/meeting-basic-needs.

Please forward this E-News to family and friends who may be interested in this information.

This week, the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry, run in partnership with Ferry Spring at South Presbyterian Church, treated the 98 families we fed to a gourmet tasting prepared by our newest volunteer, Stephanie "Chefanie" Wright. Stephanie is a nutrition-focused Ayurvedic chef, founder of The Wright Methods and former Chef de Cuisine of the Assemblage.
Here's what Stephanie had to say about her experience at the Pantry -
"We had the privilege of sharing a taste of summer this week with a sampling of grilled peaches with mint. Peaches are coming into their prime this time of year and we wanted to show how to make the most of seasonal flavors in an interesting way by grilling up the sweet stone fruit with some cinnamon and mint. The cinnamon helps the body process and digest the natural sugars of the fruit to reduce potential insulin spikes that can be caused by eating sugars and the mint provides a fresh, cooling taste to balance the smokiness of the grill. You can try the grilled peaches out for yourself by following the recipe below:
Ingredients: Serves 4
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 4 ripe peaches, halved and pitted and sliced into quarters
• 1 tablespoon ghee, divided
• Mint leaves, for garnish
• 1 lime, juiced
Ingredient Prep:
• Place the sliced peaches into a large bowl and add the cinnamon to allow the spice to combine with the natural sugars of the peach
• Heat grill to high. Place a seasoned cast iron pan onto the grill and add a teaspoon of ghee for each peach that you are grilling.
• Grill each peach for up to a minute or until the peach starts turning golden brown
• Remove from heat to let cool and garnish with mint leaves and lime juice.
"I had so much fun facilitating the grilled peaches tasting at the food bank yesterday! Thank you so much for allowing me to experiment and giving me a platform to share what I love to do."
We here at the Pantry are always looking for ways to continue to feed our community with dignity and respect. We hope that small touches like tablecloths and tastings will make it feel more like a farmers’ market than a food bank. Thank you, Chefanie, for helping us toward that goal!
We're also incredibly grateful to all of the teens who have helped us out, especially those who came on their last day of summer!

Tomorrow, Wednesday, July 28th, the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry, run in partnership with Dobbs Ferry Spring, will be open from 10am-noon AND 5:30-7 PM since it will be the last Wednesday of the month.

Last week, we helped 121 families, a total of 441 people. This week will be many more, we’re certain.

We couldn’t do what we do without our ongoing relationships with Feeding Westchester, Temple Beth Shalom - Hastings on Hudson, MOM's Organic Market and countless others. Special thanks for last week’s donations from among others, the Scarsdale Women’s Club, Elmwood Day Camp, Panera Bread and NY Bagel Authority in Dobbs Ferry. We also continue our partnership with The Sharing Shelf to offer a week's worth of clothing to some of our youngest clients.

MOST NEEDED ITEMS this week, which can be left in the tan bin outside the middle doors at the church near the Yoga sign:

Size 4, 5 and 6 diapers and baby wipes, peanut butter in plastic jars, tomato sauce in plastic jars and tuna.

TEENS NEEDED! (High school and older preferred) We need volunteers to help tomorrow and throughout the summer, so if you can help please email [email protected]. THANKS!!

Tomorrow, June 23rd, the Dobbs Ferry Food Pantry at South Presbyterian Church, run in partnership with Dobbs Ferry Spring, will be open between 10am and noon.

Last week Dr. Nitin Gupta from Rivertowns Pediatrics FINISHED administering COVID-19 vaccines for our clients. THANK YOU Dr Gupta!

Last week our clients also received meals from The Cookery Restaurant courtesy of Architect Stephen Tilly! We only offer meals occasionally, and they were definitely a treat last week.

EVERY week, however, the Dobbs Ferry Food pantry continues its mission to offer at least some organic food to our clients, from a combination of Roots and Wings, (the “Kitchen” garden at South Church), Fable: From Farm to Table, the Springhurst Elementary School Garden and MOM's Organic Market

Our other regular partners, including Feeding Westchester, Made By RK, Temple Beth Shalom - Hastings on Hudson, Ardsley United Methodist Church and the Scarsdale Women’s Club keep us stocked with other goods.

And we always have a share of young people involved, whether it's little ones harvesting from the gardens or getting a tour of our operations to teens and young adults from neighboring villages as well as our own.

If you’d like to donate money to help our neighbors get the food they need, use the links above. Donations of UNOPENED PACKAGES THAT HAVEN'T EXPIRED can be left in the bin outside the church doors, and for larger donations contact us at [email protected].

This week, the items we need most are tuna, crunchy peanut butter, and low sugar cereal. We always need diapers, especially size 5 and 6, and wipes. If the bin outside the church is stuffed please try to make sure it closes tightly, as we don’t check the bin every day.

THANK YOU!
