Fresh snow fell overnight at Green Lakes State Park and seeing it from high above feels like watching winter rediscover itself. The world turns quiet here after a storm. Trees stand in perfect silence. Trails soften under fresh powder. And then there are the lakes. Those unbelievable shades of blue that refuse to dull even in the coldest months.

Green Lakes is one of the rarest places in the world. Its waters are meromictic which means the layers never mix. That creates clarity that feels unreal and color that seems borrowed from somewhere far away. From the sky you can see deep turquoise surrounded by a forest wrapped in white. Few places look like this on Earth and we get to call it part of our backyard in Central New York.

Flying above it after a heavy snowfall is a reminder of how lucky we are to live here. It feels like nature is letting us in on a secret. A quiet moment. A story that continues through every season. And winter might just be the most magical chapter of all.
