Some logos are meticulously designed and iterated upon over and over again… This one was discovered!

When Berea College asked Crosshatch to help shape the experience of its new Visitor Center, the assignment wasn’t to create a logo. It was to help tell one of the most remarkable stories in Appalachia through the space itself. As the exhibit design evolved, something unexpected emerged!

Looking at the plans for the Visitor Center from above, the pathways, the intersections, and gathering places began to form a visual language of their own. That language became the foundation for the identity system.

Rather than “stamping” the experience once completed, the brand grew from it. The result is an identity that feels inseparable from the Visitor Center itself… One that extends across signage, graphics, merch, and communications, while remaining rooted in the “architecture“ of the space.

We will share more about how the physical environment took shape in a future post, but for now we are excited to finally share the Berea College Visitor Center brand. We are incredibly grateful to Berea College for trusting Crosshatch with a project that has both been challenging and utterly rewarding!

The most valuable creative work rarely begins with aesthetics alone.

It usually begins during a meaningful transition.

A company entering a new phase of growth.
A founder trying to articulate a bigger vision.
An organization that no longer looks or sounds like who it has become.

Over time, we’ve realized the strongest partnerships come from helping organizations navigate those moments with clarity, strategy, and systems that feel human.

Most creative studios position themselves around what they can produce.Logos. Websites. Campaigns. Packaging. Strategy.A long list of capabilities. And while versatility matters, I’ve started to realize there’s a point where offering “a little bit of everything” begins to flatten perception i...

Simple branding isn’t about doing less. It’s about understanding what matters most and having the discipline to remove everything else.

A few thoughts on why simplicity is often the hardest part of the process.

There’s a moment in almost every branding project where things start getting crowded.More ideas.More messaging.More graphics.More explanations.More “just one more thing.”And honestly, complexity is easy.Anyone can add. Few people know what to remove.Simple branding often gets mistaken for mini...

New work for AEC1099.

AEC1099 exists to connect independent talent with Architecture, Engineering, and Construction organizations in a way that feels credible, clear, and intentional. We translated that idea into a brand system built around structure, connection, and momentum.

From typography and layout systems to digital applications, swag, conference branding, and UI concepts, every piece was designed to reflect the values at the center of the platform: independence, clarity, credibility, partnership, and momentum.

A lot of businesses don’t have a branding problem.

They have a growth problem.

The company evolved. The work got sharper. The team got more experienced. The vision became clearer.

But the branding stayed frozen in an earlier version of the business.

At a certain point, the disconnect becomes obvious.
The website undersells the work.
The messaging sounds generic.
The visual identity no longer reflects the level of thinking behind the company.

That’s usually the moment businesses realize they haven’t outgrown design.
They’ve outgrown who they used to be.

A lot of businesses think branding problems show up all at once. They don’t.Most of the time, the company evolves slowly while the branding stays frozen in place. The business gets sharper. More experienced. More confident. More capable. But the website still sounds like year one. The logo still feel...
