5 years of impact, growth, community, and sustainability 🌱♻️

We’re so grateful to everyone who has supported the Food Recovery for Rhode Island initiative over the past five years. From our volunteers and partners to every individual helping us reduce food waste and fight food insecurity. What originally began as an idea rooted in community, education, and food equity, has grown into a statewide movement. We have helped create real food system changes across Rhode Island and beyond.

Collectively, over the past five years, we have:
• Diverted more than 520,000 pounds of wasted food from landfills
• Recovered and donated 400,000 pounds of surplus food
• Inspired meaningful behavior change in hundreds of participants
• Built a growing network of community changemakers across the state

We especially want to thank our amazing donors, , , .doughnuts, , and for their generous donations and support in helping us celebrate this milestone!

The most inspiring part of this journey has been seeing alumni, volunteers, educators, and community partners continue this work on farms, in schools, food pantries, neighborhoods, and communities throughout Rhode Island. As Food Recovery for the Future expands nationally across more than 30 states, we’re excited to continue building a collaborative, community-driven future for food recovery.

Here’s to 5 years of food recovery, local impact turning into national impact, and many more impactful years to come ♻️✨

"There's always a good reason to get outside and grow." 🌱

Cherry tomatoes are the perfect place to start, "they are a great way to build your confidence as a gardener, ” Shanelle Haile, FRRI Class of ‘25, Master Gardener Class of ‘26 says. And don't stress about keeping things tidy, those old stems are actually important habitats for bees and other beneficial insects.

Food insecurity in Rhode Island is more common than many people realize.

In a recent conversation with Bill Bartholomew, Dr. Amanda Missimer from the University of Rhode Island discussed the systems behind hunger, food waste, and how communities can work together to build a better food system.

From rising grocery costs to food redistribution, solutions start with collaboration, education, and action. Organizations like FRRI are helping bridge the gap by recovering surplus food and getting it to neighbors who need it most.

A little 🌧️ won’t keep us from composting! We loved visiting during the Lil’ Rhody Compost Tour. We learned three ways to turn food scraps into a nutrient rich soil amendment and toured the hoop houses and gardens growing year round at this community farm.

The BFS compost crew is led by the organization’s very first staff member, Karen Griffiths,FRRI class of ‘25 and supported by some of our grads including Anne Marie in this video. We had fun exchanging ideas and planning future collaborations in the springtime rain.

Happy International Compost Awareness Week!
