Scott Pelley spent 37 years at CBS News telling the stories that mattered most. He covered wars, told very difficult stories, and did his job with integrity and compassion. He covered 9/11, and on 60 Minutes he played real radio recordings from inside the Twin Towers so the world could finally hear how far the brave FDNY firefighters climbed. And for nearly four decades, he told the news like it was and showed up for the truth every single time.
But on June 2, 2026, Scott was fired. He said the principles he held dear were gone and he could no longer stay. He walked out of the building where he had spent most of his life as a journalist. In a statement, Scott said, "I depart after 37 years at CBS with one emotion, a heart brimming with gratitude for the men and women of CBS News who encouraged and enriched my work, very often at the risk of their own lives."
Within hours, thousands of messages poured in from across the country from viewers, colleagues, and journalists. He closed his statement with a prayer and said, "I pray for a day when those people and their ideals are honored again, a day when sanity, competence, and courage return."
