AR Countess 5J is licking her lips because the cows are still enjoying our grass stockpile with no hay supplementation. We’re pretty grateful, and know the cows are too!

We are loving still having Shorthorn and Shorthorn X calves hitting the ground. We’re slowly wrapping fall calving season up, and each new calf is met with joy and gratitude.

Two droughts and two moves have taken a substantial toll on our herd over the last fifteen years.

We’re now in a position where our ranch has room to grow, but rebuilding takes time when the goal is more than simply replacing numbers.

Our Shorthorn herd represents generations of breeding, selection, and work. While we could increase numbers more quickly by purchasing outside cattle, our priority is to build on the genetics and foundation we’ve spent generations developing ourselves.

That means retaining females, being selective about what we keep, and making decisions with the long-term future of the herd in mind. As a result, our availability may be limited at times.

To everyone who has inquired about our cattle, thank you for your interest in Albaugh Ranch. Please know that we take your inquiries seriously and appreciate the opportunity to connect with you. As we rebuild, we look forward to working with you in the future.

We believe the cattle we raise are worth the wait, and we appreciate your patience as we rebuild and offer limited offerings.

Calves are curious little creatures. Now I’m wondering if this is one of the reasons cows lose their ear tags. (Just kidding, but there really must be something about tags based on this calf.)

There's a lot of value in preserving the dual-purpose qualities of Native Shorthorns, even in a beef-focused breeding program.

As a registered cow-calf operation, we're always striving to raise better beef cattle. We also value our cattle's milking ability and deliberately select for high butterfat, not just milk volume.

That’s because milk production matters in a beef herd too. Research has shown that calves from higher-milking beef cows can average 37 lbs heavier at 205-day weaning. We’d say that could be a pretty strong argument for heritage genetics.

Pictured is an old favorite of ours, AR Countess 1Z. Over her lifetime, she raised replacement heifers and herd bulls, put beef in the freezer, and provided milk for the house. To us, she represents the versatility that makes these Native Shorthorn cattle so special.

Your herd can be productive and pretty too. That’s why we believe in the traits Native Shorthorn cattle bring to the table on our operation! ☺️

We posted this a year ago and it’s too cute not to share again. There may be different fall calves on the ground this year, but baby calf antics never change!
