What does Ohana mean to me? 🌺
When we started this little shaved ice business, it was never just about the treats. It was about our kids. We wanted them to learn how to work hard, manage money, and take on responsibility — all while having a little fun along the way. That’s why when Scott suggested the name Ohana Shaved Ice, it just felt right.
We love Hawaii — it’s our favorite place to visit — and what we love most about it is the culture: so centered on family. But what we quickly learned is that Ohana doesn’t just mean blood. In Hawaiian culture, it means the people you choose. The ones who become family along the way.
Over the years, every one of our kids has worked this trailer. My daughter’s best friends, Megan and Joanna, have run shift after shift. My niece Savannah and our “bonus daughter” Kaitlynn can operate the trailer all on their own. This summer, the boys’ best friends, Landon and Carson, have jumped in to help, too.
Last night, I was working solo when a line of 20+ people formed out of nowhere — and just kept coming. No backup in sight. I looked up and saw three of our regular “fair kids” who’ve probably bought dozens of shaved ice from us. I called one by name and said, “Get in here and help!” Without hesitation, they jumped in and started figuring it out. They were naturals — and honestly they looked a little disappointed when Macie Lynn arrived to take over!
That’s Ohana to me.
It’s those kids — not related by blood, but part of our family all the same.
It’s every friend who’s worked a shift, every customer who feels like a neighbor, and every kid who jumps in to lend a hand just because they can (even if the promise of a free shaved ice might help a little 😉).
We’re grateful for all of you.
Mahalo for being part of our Ohana. 💙
