Did you know the hermit once rode out a hurricane at the top of a tree on Deer Island?🌲

When a powerful hurricane began brewing off the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1947, residents tried unsuccessfully to persuade the Hermit of Deer Island (Jean Guilhot) to evacuate. Stubbornly refusing to leave his beloved, Guilhot rode out the storm by climbing one of its tallest trees and securing himself to its trunk as the hurricane made landfall. πŸŒ€

Afterwards, many coastal residents assumed he had drowned. Alvin Baker, who had also lived on Deer Island, late recalled seeing Guilhot stroll out of the woods amidst shouts of β€œHe's alive!” from the many astonished onlookers. The hurricane destroyed Guilhot's home and devastated the oyster beds that had supported him. But like most people who calls this coast home, he was nothing if not resilient. πŸ¦ͺ

He rebuilt. A short while later his home was again lost (this time to fire), though still Jean remained undeterred. Again he rebuilt, and in the end our beloved hermit would continue living on Deer Island for around four decades.

[Interestingly, he even received a paycheck as the official watchman of the island:
