For this weekend's fish fry we hit the road and drove down to Princeton, Illinois and went to the Alexander Park Tavern. With a crew of seven in tow we arrived about 5pm and were able to be seated immediately.
The menu had some pretty great choices - Jumbo Shrimp (available deep fried or broiled), Deep Fried Whole Catfish Tilapia, and Cod. Six of us ordered fish and, of course, my First Mate didn't (shocking, I know 🤯)
The 3 meals of Jumbo Shrimp received rave reviews from around the table. Sounds like you can't go wrong ordering deep fried or broiled. Guess on my next visit down I'll have to order one of each 😉
No Catfish landed on our table but the nice sized Tilapia that one of the crew had looked great and was said to be excellent...add it to the list 😋
I ordered a side salad because it sounded so good and I was not disappointed. A crisp bed of lettuce topped with croutons, shredded carrots, tomato, and a cucumber slice. Next came the 8oz Cod meal served on a slice of bread with my choice of two sides- french fries and coleslaw. The Cod was a nice sized piece, tasted good and had an amazing flavored hand tossed batter. I wish I could have had one more piece. The piece of bread that the Cod was served on was a nice change to the standard roll. I enjoyed how it was not only warmed up by the cod but also had a great taste of the cod melted in.
My First Mate had a Chicken Salad Sandwich served on a croissant along with a side of applesauce. It looked like a very refreshing, lite meal and she said it was ok. The chicken salad had a good flavor but the croissant was just a little dry - nothing a little mayonnaise couldn't help.
The Alexander Park Tavern, established in 1934, was actually a quaint house turned restaurant, had a very friendly vibe inside, and can accommodate patrons of all ages.
Its always fun when you can enjoy a good fish fry with friends and family. I look forward to our next family visit and meal at the Alexander Park Tavern.
