RGV Real Food Project

RGV Real Food Project Social solidarity+ food awareness= sustainable food system Who are we? Why are we doing this? What's our mission? How will we push this advocacy campaign?
1.

We're a group of local food warriors attempting to connect local farmers, our communities, and local businesses as we aim for a sustainable local food system- We're students, mothers, farmers, educators, community leaders, and active environmentalists. For far too long the Rio Grande Valley has been associated with negativity in terms of food choices, toxic agriculture methods, health status, etc.

- but despite our setbacks (which may or may not be directly our fault- this page is not engaging in that debate) we have the power to change our systematic food issues- by eliminating poisons from the food we eat and grow, supporting our local farmers and economy, and by capitalizing on food education. To bring local organic produce awareness, availability, and accessibility to Rio Grande Valley residents despite their location, socioeconomic status, or educational background. Working as the/with the/for community;
2. Maximizing on sustainable agricultural education;
3. Supporting local organic farmers;
4. Active engagement on relatable food issues. What can you do? Like and Share. :)
*More to come as far as involvement*

Grace Heritage Ranch has a nice compiled list of vendors across all farmers markets- not all of them are current but for the most it's a really good list! Check it out

Discover local farmer markets here in South Texas. If you would like us to add your business to the list, please send us an email with a photograph of your storefront and/or owners!

"Successful social movements are formed by integrating activism with livelihoods. These integrated movements create the sustained social pressure that produces political will—the key to changing the structures that presently work against sustainability."

Have you been to the farm crawl yet? A market out in Bayview, located at their personal farms- they have a variety of local grown produce, eggs, added value goods (I believe they even have someone offering self brewed beer), and the opportunity to meet and greet some awesome farmers. Go out and meet Jack and his wife yourself- the team spearheading this community effort.

If you need an excuse to explore the countryside on a Friday afternoon, look at a chicken, pet a goat, or buy a melon or a hunk of cheese, you’re in luck.

Watch out for these two, Juan Raygoza & Chris Bueno, who are already incredibly involved in the local food movement but will be pushing the bar this fall in an effort to transform our regions farming potential.

"Unfortunately, grocery stores are just the tip of the iceberg. Everything from restaurants, to convenience stores (which substitute for grocery stores in some low-income areas), to even some school meal programs are environments that make junk food the path of least resistance and/or default option. When it comes to eating healthy, the deck is rigged against us"

I want to commend Mark Bittman on the underlying message in his recent editorial in the New York Times,

We need to get creative!

We need to get creative!

Teaching an updated set of cooking skills to schoolkids could help reduce a major financial and environmental problem.

In Sacramento, small farms can have a big impact because they hire local labor and buy supplies from local stores. That’s why a dollar in sales at a farmers market generates twice as much local economic activity as a dollar in revenue at one of region’s larger farms.

Give it up to President Obama for supporting yet another Monsanto stunt in order to stray away from food transparency.
A couple of reasons why this is important:
1. Genetically engineered ingredient disclosure format is now up to the company. The option of a code scanner will now be the norm - making it extremely difficult for folks who don't have access to smart phones/time/tech savvy.
2. This was both written by and completely in benefit of the Monsanto giant, their track record for food transparency/ population health concern/etc is non existent.
3. The bill states that no matter what negative direct consequence on human health GMO/GE foods may prove in the future, Monsanto is free of all responsibility and can continue sales.
4. Lastly, this is a huge reason why supporting local foods is of utter importance now more than ever- know what you're eating, who's producing it, and that anti transparency bills such as this one can't possibly be in favor of the consumer.

The Monsanto Protection Act, essentially both written by and benefiting Monsanto Corporation, has been signed into law by United States President Barack Obama. The infamous Monsanto Corporation wil...

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Food waste plays such a critical role in sustainability- do you know any organization/business taking a concrete stand against food waste in the RGV? If so, please let us know, we would love to support them and give them a shout out.

With approximately 40% of US food being wasted ever year, and only 5% of that waste being recycled, there is a lot of room for positive change. This short film…
