There are few musicals as recognizable as Footloose. Nearly everyone knows the title song, and even those who have never seen the stage production are familiar with the story of a small town where dancing has been banned. It would be easy for a production to lean entirely on that nostalgia, letting the familiar music carry the evening. Fortunately, Riverside City College’s latest production understands that while the songs may bring audiences through the doors, it is the relationships between the characters that have kept Footloose relevant for more than four decades.

For many theatergoers, Shakespeare can feel intimidating. The language is centuries old, the plots can become tangled, and it is easy to worry about missing an important detail. Full Circle Players has built its annual Shakespeare in the Park series around eliminating those concerns, inviting audiences to simply relax, laugh, and enjoy one of the Bard’s most beloved comedies under the summer sky.

When Spring Awakening debuted on Broadway in 2006, it shocked audiences by pairing the repression of nineteenth-century Germany with a contemporary rock score that gave voice to the fears, frustrations, and desires of adolescence. Nearly twenty years later, the themes at the heart of the Tony Award-winning musical remain just as relevant. Fine Arts Network Theater Company’s latest production, directed by Julian Steven, embraces that timelessness through an intimate staging that places the audience directly inside the emotional lives of its characters.

A few weeks ago, I sat down with Maxwell Myers and Eduardo Foss at Back to the Grind to talk about the Fake Actors Guild, their ongoing series of live table reads based on shows like Bob’s Burgers and Futurama.

If you have seen one of their flyers and thought, “Why would I go watch people read a script,” you are not alone.

That is usually the first reaction.

When audiences hear the phrase “miscast show,” they often imagine a simple musical r***e. Performers step up to a microphone, sing a song traditionally associated with a character they would never be cast as, and then make way for the next performer. While that format can be entertaining, it rarely offers much in the way of storytelling.

Act Out Enrichment’s The Miscast Show, which opens June 12 at The Box Theatre in Riverside, takes a far more ambitious approach.

Riverside City College’s production of As You Like It does more than stage one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Under the direction of Jason Buuck, the production transforms Landis Performing Arts Center into an intimate Forest of Arden where audiences become participants in the story itself.
