If we weren't in the mountains this probably wouldn't happen so much! If our roastery were nearer a major port it would be different - we could even go pick up coffee ourselves. Our coffee, however, needs to be trucked over 2,500 miles to make it to us, up and over mountain passes and through our valley to 8,750ft. There's plenty of opportunity for straps on the pallets to be compromised from slamming on the brakes or twisting around tight curves. It keeps us strong needing to restack these up to 70kg bags! Lift with your legs!!

Most Guatemalan coffee farms use shade trees due to the intense nature of the daily sun in those parts of the world.
Without shade the plants would produce prolific amounts of fruit but the quality would suffer as the tree would be stressed from overproduction. Shade moderates temperature, slows cherry development and supports soil health and biodiversity.

Reviews like these really matter to us.

Our coffee travels well. It's already traveled thousands of miles to get to us and, if it tastes great in Telluride, it should taste just as good on your kitchen counter. We think it does!

We're so proud that customers feel this way!!

A washed coffee being described as “clean” or “structured,” means: Clear acidity, defined sweetness, transparent flavor notes.

That clarity begins at origin — with careful picking, and controlled washing.

Right now our washed coffee offerings include our new Mexico Paraiso (Chiapas) and Ethiopia Kolla Bolcha!! Available on our site.

After washing the coffee, preparation still has a long way to go.
Drying is the following step.
In many Guatemalan villages, for example, drying happens on patios and concrete pads near growers’ homes. The parchment coffee is then transported to the dry mill for hulling and sorting.
One of the most important steps in the stewardship of this motivating bean is making sure moisture drops gradually to around 10–12% before export which stops mold growth.

Another pallet rolling in courtesy of our friends at Grand Mesa Packaging in Grand Junction. We buy all our shipping boxes and supplies from them and they ferry green coffee from Grand Junction to Telluride for us most weeks. Thank you to Mandi, Donna, Michael and Josh - it's a huge help!!

Coffee seedlings in Guatemala. These seedlings are loved and protected as they become plants. Look at how many cuties there are!

It can take up to 5 years for a plant to produce fruit but the tree will then produce for as long as it's pruned and tended to.

Dry air.
Intense light.
Roasting here allows us to be passionate at work and play (corny alert but it's true!) Even though this winter has been warm and dry, this environment always gives us perspective.
