Do you believe in ghosts? You might experience one in York’s very first brewery!

👻 Ghosts of Downtown York: Something Brewing at Working Theory

Grace Melendez had just stepped outside to lock up when she realized she had forgotten to clock out.

It was after midnight following a night of karaoke at Working Theory B**r Co. . She went back inside, turned on the light, and took a few steps toward the bar.

Then she heard a crash.

It was so loud that Grace thought a brewing tank had fallen or kegs were being thrown around. She ran back outside and texted her coworker, Kristen Doran, to clock her out. She wasn’t going back in!

The next morning, Kristen checked the brewing area. Nothing had fallen. Nothing was broken. There was no sign of what had made the noise.

But Grace and Kristen say that wasn’t the first unusual experience at the brewery.

In April, Kristen was getting ready to open when she heard toilets flushing and bathroom doors opening and closing. She was the only one in the building at the time. She sent owner Jesse VanVoorhis a message: “By the way, your brewery’s haunted.”

Another evening during trivia, Kristen heard rustling near the storage area. She leaned over from her seat behind the bar and saw a dark figure moving down the hallway. She says she could make out what looked like a long coat before the figure passed through a closed bathroom door.

A visitor had also described seeing a figure in a long black overcoat near the office.

Then there’s the storage door. Staff say it’s difficult to open quietly, yet they’ve found it standing open several times after being certain it was shut.

As for the crash that sent Grace running outside, Grace and Kristen say the security recording captured the late-night crash. While watching it, they also heard what sounded like muffled voices and saw two small white orbs moving in front of the camera after Grace ran outside.

They still don’t know what caused the noise. But after everything they’ve seen and heard, they can’t help but wonder:

When it’s time to lock up, are they really the last ones there?
