Standing just outside Gansbaai on the rugged Birkenhead Peninsula, the Danger Point Lighthouse has watched over the southern Cape since 1895 as both a guiding beacon and a solemn memorial to the HMS Birkenhead tragedy of 1852, where the enduring tradition of “women and children first” was born; today, this striking white tower continues to flash its warning across treacherous waters while welcoming visitors; thanks to dedicated local volunteers—who climb its steep staircases to experience sweeping views of the wild coastline, rolling fynbos, and endless ocean, making it a powerful place where history, resilience, and natural beauty meet.
