Can you do the Bowen Lighthouse Walk outside of the recommended dates?

We've gotten this question a lot.

It is ALWAYS recommended that you stick to the publicised dates and times.

Because the Bowen Lighthouse Walk is not simply a walk you can do whenever the water looks shallow.

It relies on a very specific combination of extremely low tides and the right timing.

Outside those dates and times:

🌊 The water may be too deep to safely cross.

⏰ The tide can be coming back in while you are still on the island.

πŸͺ¨ The route includes rocky, uneven and slippery areas.

πŸ¦” There are sharp oysters, rocks, coral and sea urchins underfoot.

πŸš‘ There is no guarantee of an easy or safe return route.

🧭 The exposed sand spit can become covered as the tide rises.

🌊 Outside of the few dates the water in the channel is fast moving and deep.

Please stick to the recommended dates and times, wear suitable footwear, and treat the tide times as a safety requirement β€” not just a suggestion.

The walk is officially undertaken at your own risk.

Between Bowen and Home Hill you'll find this great highway pitstop.

Gumlu is home to both a Big Pumpkin and a Big Watermelon.

They're located together at the roadside produce stop on the Bruce Highway.

There's plenty of photo opportunities, a picnic area, shady trees and fresh produce for sale.

Where sugar cane fields meet the beach.

Drive through Ayr's sugar cane fields to discover this stunning beach in North Queensland.

If you're planning a North Queensland road trip, this beautiful beach deserves a place on your itinerary.

Just 15 minutes from Ayr in the Burdekin region, Alva Beach is one of North Queensland's best-kept secrets.

Drive through sugar cane fields around Ayr until you reach Alva Beach 🌾🌊

With kilometres of golden sand and a relaxed coastal atmosphere, it's the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the outdoors.

These high tide/ low tide warning signs are great! Might need some around Bowen for the next lighthouse walk 😁

Black snow falling on the streets of Ayr in North Queensland.

In Ayr and the Burdekin, "black snow" is the local nickname for the light black ash that floats through the air during the sugar cane harvest season after cane fields are burned before harvesting.

It's not snow at all. It's tiny, delicate flakes of burnt sugar cane leaves that drift down like snowflakes.

Big Things Of Australia πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Here's the Big Carpet Python in Ayr.

If you're driving through Ayr, the Gubulla Munda giant carpet snake is one of the town's most unique attractions.

The sculpture is an impressive 60 metres long and is located in Plantation Park, just off the Bruce Highway, making it an easy stop for road trippers.

What makes it special is that it's much more than just a "Big Thing."

Gubulla Munda is the Aboriginal totem and protective spirit of the Birri Gubba people, giving the sculpture deep cultural and spiritual significance.

It was commissioned by the Gudjuda Reference Group, built in 2004, and painted by Aboriginal artists to celebrate and promote Indigenous culture.

Here's why you should stop in Ayr on your next North Queensland road trip.

Ayr is one of those classic North Queensland towns that rewards travellers who take the time to stop, explore, and experience a slice of authentic country Queensland before hitting the road again.

Driving through the lush cane fields is beautiful but be sure to stop for:

🌿 Plantation Park, with its shady picnic areas, visitor information centre and caravan-friendly facilities.

🐍 The giant Gubulla Munda carpet snake sculpture, a striking piece of Indigenous cultural artwork in Plantation Park.

πŸ₯– Great cafΓ©s and bakeries for a road trip break. There's also a big Coles and Woolworths.

πŸ› Stroll along Ayr main street for great boutique shopping and beautiful buildings.

πŸ¦€ Nearby Alva Beach if you've got time for a short detour.
