I must confess the very first batch of loaves out of the oven this morning looked a little rustic and sorry for themselves. Flat, misshapen, not their best work by any measure.

Some mornings the dough just has other ideas. Too cold, proved a touch too long, who can say. You do this for as long as I have and it still keeps you humble. I had a quiet word with the oven, started the next lot, and they came out behaving themselves. 😅

Nobody out the front is any the wiser, which is how it should be. But it seems worth saying now and then that behind the warm shop and the fresh loaves there is a fair bit of trial and error, and the odd quiet swear word before dawn.

The shop was full of bleary eyes and spirited chatter first thing this morning, the whole town coming down off the grand finale of the World Cup.

There is something I find genuinely wonderful about a quiet country town getting so thoroughly caught up in a spectacle played out half a world away. Everyone comparing notes on the match, replaying the big moments, all bonded together by hot pastries and a shared, cheerful lack of sleep. ⚽

A fair few looked like they had not been to bed at all, and I would not be surprised if some of them hadn't. We kept the coffee strong and the pastries coming, which is about all a person can do for the walking wounded on a Monday.

Deep winter Sundays have a marvellous way of talking a body into staying under the blankets a fraction longer. I do not blame anyone for giving in to it this time of year.

But for the early risers, and for the impossibly patient dogs tied up out the front, the shop stays a warm beacon. There is always a hardy few who make it in, breath fogging as they come through the door, and we have plenty of hot coffee and fresh croissants waiting for the ones brave enough to step out into the cold. 🐕

The dogs, bless them, wait without a word of complaint, ears pricked at every opening of the door, hoping for a pat or a crumb. They usually get both.

The Saturday sporting crowd came through nice and early this morning, all wrapped up tight in thick coats and scarves of red and white. Off to stand in the cold for a few hours and cheer the Swans on.

Winter footy is its own kind of madness and I say that with real affection. Rugged up on the sidelines, thermos in the bag, hands around a cup, roaring till you are hoarse, then home to thaw out. You cannot help but admire that sort of sturdy, unwavering dedication to the town's colours. 🧣

We sent a fair few of them off with a coffee for the road and something to see them through to the second quarter.

Are you down at the ground today? Give the Swans a cheer from me if you are.

There is something reassuring about a tray of lasagna just out of the oven.

Golden on top, bubbling around the edges, and filling the bakery with the kind of smell that makes it very difficult to walk past without changing your lunch plans.

Our Beef Lasagna has quietly become one of those meals people come back for. Hearty, comforting, and just the thing on a chilly winter's day.

Word over the counter this morning is that half the district has taken it into their heads to do Christmas in July this weekend. It brings a smile to my face just picturing it, the roaring fires and the questionable knitwear being dusted off.

It makes a funny kind of sense down here. The real thing lands in the heat of summer when nobody wants a hot roast, so doing it again in the cold, fire going, big lunch on, is when it actually suits the weather. 🎄

And on a Friday, of course, the pie warmer is doing its usual brisk trade. If you need a bit of honest sustenance before the grand roasting begins, our chicken and leek pies are sitting hot and waiting.

Anyone doing Christmas in July this year? Full roast, or just an excuse for pudding?

A charming couple passing through on a long drive stopped in yesterday. You can always spot the travellers, looking about a bit, asking what is good.

They got their coffees and something to eat, sat by the window a while, and on the way out the woman declared our little bakery the absolute highlight of their journey. She said it so warmly and so plainly that I believed her, and it carried me right through the rest of the afternoon. 😊

You forget sometimes, when it is the same faces and the same street every day, that to someone driving through we might be the whole memory of the town. A warm room and a good coffee on a cold day. Not a bad thing to be remembered as.

A good part of the town is moving at a remarkably slow pace this morning, and I know exactly why. A fair few rose at some ungodly hour to watch the World Cup football beamed in from the other side of the world.

You can pick them a mile off. Bleary eyed, a bit vague, ordering on autopilot. So we have been brewing the coffee just a touch stronger today, a small mercy for the dedicated souls trying to face a working week on three hours' sleep. ⚽

There is something I love about our quiet country town getting swept up in a match played half a world away. Everyone comparing notes on the game, all a bit worse for wear together.

With the children back at their desks, the weekday mornings have settled back into their familiar shape. Second day of term and it is as though the holidays never happened.

There is a lovely lull that descends once the school bus has been and gone. The early rush scatters, the parents head off to work, and for a little while it is just the regulars, the low murmur of the radio and the hiss of the coffee machine warming back up. ☕

The holidays are grand, but I will admit there is something steadying about knowing the shape of the day again. The town runs on its rhythms, and this is one of the good, quiet ones.
