Another wonderful evening at our café, filled with laughter, conversations and stories shared around the table.
This year, we made the decision not to continue our free soup program. Not because we no longer want to help, but because we realised many of the people collecting it weren't actually those in need. For us, the purpose behind it had slowly been lost.
So David and I started thinking... what else could we do that would truly make a difference?
Over the past few years, we've said goodbye to many of our regular customers, most of them elderly. One memory has stayed with us. We had just seen an elderly lady enjoying lunch with her friends. She looked frail, but the way they smiled, cared for one another and treasured each other's company was beautiful. Just two weeks later, one of her friends came back to tell us she had passed away.
It reminded me of my own grandfather. Every week, he would look forward to meeting his friends. Afterwards, he would excitedly tell me who he had seen and what they had talked about. Looking back now, I realise those simple gatherings meant so much more than just sharing a meal.
So this year, we'd love to cook for a group of seniors. To give them another reason to gather, to chat, to laugh, and to create more memories together. It's also our way of thanking them for everything they have contributed to our community over the years. In many ways, we are still learning from them.
A huge thank you to Adam and Michelle from Connecting Community Services(Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre). The moment they heard about our idea, they offered their support and helped connect us with DANS to make this evening possible.
Running a business can't always be about making money. We are certainly not wealthy, but if we have the ability to give something back, then we should. Never forget where we came from. Never forget why we started.
That has always been our philosophy. ❤️
