Raspberry Shortcake 💖

You asked and I’ve delivered. Whenever Nana would make this it was lucky to last the afternoon. It would always make me so happy when people would get it at the shop, or tell me they hadn’t had it since their grandparent made it for them.

You can either make this in a slice form, or using silicone moulds make individual ones. This is a good one to take over to a friend for a cuppa and slice. Maybe if they have lost a grandparent or it’s an anniversary. Something to show you’re there and listening.

Some solace up at the farm.
Trying to not let myself slip back into the mundane and grind of life. To be sure I see all that’s around me for its simplicity and nothing more. It’s isolated, but I’ve had more time to breathe deeply and see the sun come up around me.
I’m hoping to continue baking and making this page about life after death(s). It’s not at all comfortable to share things about this reality but that’s the whole point..
Let me know what you miss from the shop, maybe it can inspo for the next video 🤎

Anzacs 🇦🇺

One of my Nana’s specialities and a classic. They’re cheap to make and the method I use is arguably more straight forward than the ‘traditional’ way.
I had some of my nearest and dearest visit us this weekend on the farm. It was so nice to share the fresh air and slow pace with them. We sat around the fire and had the biscuit barrel cleaned out pretty quick.

Whilst it wasn’t a sad weekend, it was a good reminder to slow down with the ones you love. Make them something that is special to you and share it round. In the video, you can see that you can make the dough and then cook when you please. So it makes for a perfect gift to someone that they might use in a similar situation. 🤎

These were always available at the shop and it was so amazing to receive the feedback I did on them. Given they have a special place in my heart. Sharing these with my friends over the weekend made me think of Nana witnessing it from the sky and hopefully putting a smile on her face 🥰

Vegetarian Lasagne 🍅

Lasagne and death needs to be studied 😂
It makes so much sense but can ruin a good thing. I think everyone can relate to wanting ‘Mums lasagne’ when they get home after a long time away, it’s what you’d choose if your parents asked and it’s what you attest to your Mum having the best recipe for.

Equally, it’s a real comforting meal. Albeit, people only seem to make it when people are in need of it (or their Mum makes it 😂) and not for themselves. People who came into the shop would order one of mine being they were time poor and struggled to get past the spag bol.
If that’s your situation, give this veggie one a go. It’s basically just cutting and assembling.

I had too much time I forgot about it and overcooked it 🫠 but, still tastes great which is what matters.

Comment 🍅 for the recipe - make one for your friends too. This mix went a long way!

Muffins 🧁

My Mum lovedddd a muffin. Always with her coffee order, she would request one. Raspberry and white chocolate her go to. Because I was so young when she passed and definitely not allowed a coffee (😂) it’s something that I am so sad I can’t do with her nowadays. Also having had the shop, I know she would’ve been a regular. Muffins are great because you can make big or small ones which is appealing when you’re grieving. Having the choice of size can make eating a little more approachable.

Make these and take them to your friend. Have a cuppa and a warm muffin together 😊

Banana and chocolate were the favourite at the shop, but this base can be used with basically anything! I actually was given this recipe from a teacher from my high school and it was a hit 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Mums Chocolate Pudding 🍫

What I wouldn’t give for this one last time. I can still remember exactly how it tasted, the smell of it and how it filled the house. How’d you’d be stoked even with just a slither after it made its way around the 6 of us.
Mum loved chocolate, she’d always have a ‘secret’ stash in the centre console of the car or her handbag. Poor thing was probably desperate to enjoy something to herself but instead had 4 daughters with other plans 🤷‍♀️

This dessert is up there with a dish that hurts me as much as it makes me feel her warmth again. My partner and I have recently moved closer to his family and so we’ve started having Sunday roasts. Just as my family did, my Dad determined to get us together as often as possible. Tonight I made a roast lamb and this for dessert. It will never be as good as Mum’s, but I can guarantee it will be enjoyed by all.

Perfect for someone to tuck into when they’re grieving. Load it with icecream and cry into the bowl, no judgement here… been there done that ✌🏼

Satay Chicken Stirfry 🥢

Easy and affordable, but also full of vegetables. Pair with Hokkien noodles or rice for a yummy and nourishing meal for that person going through it.

Mum and Dad gave Kantong a run for their money when we were growing up, in particular the sweet n sour which I can still taste 🫠. Dad would put roast pork from last nights dinner in corn flour and deep fry it, then pair it with the sauce. Wasn’t my fav, but it actually was pretty good. Especially if you’re looking for a meal of ‘in moderation’ lol

The sauce uses common household ingredients that won’t break the bank. Comment 🥢 for the recipe.

Bacon and Egg Cups 🥓

Using simple ingredients, a lot that are probably already in the cupboard, these can be whipped up within minutes. Instead of making a slab of something or a full quiche, sometimes the option of a singular serve can be less overwhelming and more enticing when your appetite is lacking.

You could add any veggies you like, especially if you grate them. I’ve just added what we had in the fridge and voila! Scrambled eggs with bacon throughout is something my Dad would make me every weekend, we’d sit at the breakfast bar and enjoy it together. And without a doubt, he’d say ‘if I didn’t make this myself, I’d say it was pretty good!’ 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Sausage Rolls 🌭

There is no denying that the process isn’t aesthetically pleasing, but the end result is worth it… Promise!

Making these takes me back to cooking with my Mum and Dad. The way they’d just whack things together without a recipe, with Homebrand items that were generally household staples. I’m the youngest of 4 girls so there were definitely mouths to feed. Something my parents did so well, on a strategic supermarket shop. We were always fed and nourished. Something they always made sure of when our friends were over too.

Sausage Rolls are a great thing to make for someone who is grieving. They can eat straight away or put in the freezer for the day they need that feeling you cannot find anywhere else than by eating a homemade sausage roll 🤔. And it’s normally a good one for people with kids. Something easy for them to prepare and, kids will generally eat.

It was so lovely sharing these with people on Fridays. I had people travelling from Belmont to Newtown just to get them. People would comment on the pastry and its flakiness. Which I hope showing you can make things that are yummy and cheap using Homebrand products… and it may just surprise you.

I learnt plenty from my parents in the time I had with them. But a lot of it stems from my admiration. The conscious and unconscious attention I paid watching them cook, the way they were so natural and fluent. I would watch and learn, then adapt. Which is what I like to hope I did at the shop and now, with this page (which I’m not really sure about? Are these videos worth it?) #

Tea Cake 🫖

This was and always will be one of my favourites. This is how I would make it in the shop and this is what I remember doing with Mum. The cinnamon sugar at the end being the best part, the second it was out of the oven whilst the cake was still steaming we’d get straight onto it.

I’d give anything to have a coffee and cake with my Mum and Nana. And now, with my Dad too. I loved when Dad would pop into the shop unannounced and we’d share a cake and a coffee, talking about nothing yet it felt like everything. I know a few met Dad at the shop and he was always the one making sure the kids got a few lollies from the jar 🥰

If you know of someone going through it, take them a coffee and maybe this tea cake. Let them enjoy it alone, taking a moment for themself. Maybe they’ll want to share that moment with you.

These packet mixes are about $1.5 and use staples to complete. If you need a hand with the method comment a 🫖
