☕🍸 Espresso Martini — A Classic With a Story Worth Sharing

If you’ve ever wondered why the espresso martini has become one of the most loved cocktails in Australia (and honestly, the world), it all starts with its iconic origin.

Created in London in the 1980s, the story goes that a bartender was asked for a drink that would “wake me up, then mess me up.” The result? A bold, silky blend of vodka, fresh espresso, and a touch of sweetness — a cocktail that delivers both energy and elegance in one glass.

So why is it still so popular today?
✨ It’s the perfect balance — rich coffee flavour, smooth spirits, and that signature crema on top.
✨ It suits every moment — after dinner, before a night out, or as a treat all on its own.
✨ It’s a crowd pleaser — familiar, comforting, and just a little indulgent.
✨ Australians love their coffee — and this cocktail is basically the best of both worlds.

At Brotzeit Joondalup, it’s one of those drinks that never goes out of style — a favourite for celebrations, catch ups, and those “just because” moments.

Come enjoy one with us… shaken icy cold, poured silky smooth, and guaranteed to hit the spot. 🍸✨

🍺📜 The Beer Purity Law Wasn’t About Beer — It Was About Bread

Most people have heard of the Reinheitsgebot, Bavaria’s famous Beer Purity Law. But here’s the twist: it wasn’t created to make beer “better.” It was created to stop people from running out of bread.

Back in 1516, beer was so popular that brewers were using wheat and rye — the same grains bakers needed for everyday loaves. To protect the food supply, the Bavarian rulers stepped in and declared that beer could only be made with barley, hops and water. Yeast wasn’t listed because no one had discovered it yet.

So the world’s most famous beer law? It was actually a medieval food security strategy disguised as a brewing rule.

A neat reminder that history is full of clever little decisions that shaped the traditions we enjoy today.

🍺😄 Your Daily 4–5PM Excuse to Clock Off Mentally (Even If You Can’t Clock Off Physically)

Some people call it Happy Hour. At Brotzeit, we call it the most productive hour of the day — because nothing lifts the spirit quite like an $8 tap beer, an $11 big one, or a $6.5 house wine that somehow tastes even better when you tell yourself it’s “strictly medicinal”.

Whether you’ve survived work, wrangled kids, powered through errands, or simply made it through the day on sheer willpower… your reward is waiting.

4PM–5PM. Every day. Come hydrate your happiness — Bavarian style. 🍺✨

🇩🇪🍺 The Bavarian “Stammtisch” — The Original Group Chat

Long before group chats, Facebook threads or WhatsApp pings, Bavaria had something far better: the Stammtisch.

A Stammtisch wasn’t just a table — it was a ritual. A spot in the pub reserved for the same group of locals who met every week to talk life, politics, gossip, farming, football… whatever mattered that day. It was where friendships were built, debates were had, and stories were told loudly enough for the whole room to hear.

Some pubs even had carved wooden signs marking the table, and sitting there without being part of the group was a bold move — the kind that earned you a few raised eyebrows and maybe a friendly lecture.

It’s one of those traditions that shows how deeply Bavarian culture values community, conversation and connection — long before smartphones tried to replace it.

If you want another quirky cultural gem next time, I’ve got plenty tucked away.

🍬🇩🇪 German Candied Almonds — Gebrannte Mandeln

If you’ve ever wandered through a German Weihnachtsmarkt, you’ll know the unmistakable smell of Gebrannte Mandeln — warm, sweet, cinnamon spiced candied almonds roasting in big copper pans. They’re a Christmas market classic, found at every fair and Volkfest, and now you can recreate that cosy magic at home.

This simple recipe brings all the sights, sounds and aromas of the German winter markets straight into your kitchen.

How to Make Gebrannte Mandeln
• Combine sugar, cinnamon, salt, vanilla extract and water in a heavy cast iron or non stick pan. Bring to a boil until the sugar dissolves.
• Add the almonds, reduce heat to medium high, and stir regularly.
• After 20–25 minutes, the mixture thickens and darkens — keep stirring as the sugar begins to crystallise.
• Lower the heat to medium to prevent burning. The sugar will melt again, forming a rough, crunchy coating around the almonds.
• Spread the finished almonds onto parchment paper and let them cool.
Once cooled, they’re ready to enjoy — crunchy, sweet, aromatic and absolutely addictive.

Perfect for gifting, snacking, or bringing a little German winter charm to your home.

🌾🍺 From Harvest to Stein — The Origins of Beer

Long before beer was poured fresh at the bar, it began in the fields 🌾

In many parts of Europe, July marked the start of the barley harvest — one of the essential ingredients in brewing. Communities would gather to bring in the grain that would later become bread on the table and beer in the glass.

Beer has always been deeply connected to the land and the seasons. From golden barley fields to traditional brewing techniques passed down through generations, every stein carries a little piece of that history 🍺

In Germany, this connection is everything. Brewing isn’t just about the final product — it’s about quality ingredients, patience, and respect for tradition. It’s why German beers are celebrated worldwide for their purity, consistency and craftsmanship.

At Brotzeit Joondalup, we continue that story — bringing those flavours and traditions from crop to glass. So next time you raise a stein, you’re not just enjoying a cold beer… you’re taking part in centuries of craft.

Prost! 🍻

🍷❄️ Mulled Wine at Brotzeit — A German Classic, With a Twist

Winter at Brotzeit just isn’t complete without a steaming mug of Mulled Wine — but this year, we’re serving it with a twist.

Our house recipe starts with Riesling instead of the traditional red wine, giving it a lighter, aromatic base. We simmer it gently with orange tea, fresh orange, apple and lime, plus star anise, cloves, cinnamon and a touch of caster sugar. Finished with a splash of white rum, it’s fragrant, citrusy and beautifully warming — a fresh take on a German favourite.

It’s cosy, comforting and perfect for chilly Joondalup evenings, whether you’re settling in for dinner or stopping by for a festive winter drink.

Available now throughout winter. Warm up the German way — with a little Brotzeit twist.
