Look who I found sitting at his favourite table at Gesha Cafe this morning. Thanks Ken for hosting another “Amphony Nicholls”. I look forward to shaking things up a little to make our shopping strips the envy of Victoria. Vibrant shopping villages are the heart beat of our community. This is where we meet.

Thank you so much Anthony Nicholls for Maling Ward and much appreciated for your understanding of our small community traders 🙏🙏🙏

Working from Gesha Cafe today. Thanks as always to Ken for the warm welcome. These guys know their coffee and provide a relaxed and friendly environment to be social and often in my case, to work.

I spoke to Ken about the challenges of running a small business in City of Boroondara. Here are a few takeaways for me:

1) Council needs to be more customer focused. Our local traders play a key role in ensuring that our communities remain active, social and vibrant. They bring people to our city and they showcase the lifestyle that’s available to people that live and work in Boroondara. The one question that council should constantly be asking of our traders is “what can we do to make it easier for you?”

2) There is no public toilet serving the “Mont Albert Terminus Shopping Centre”. Gesha is not set up as the defacto public toilet. There are options within this precinct to set up suitable facilities for the whole community. Let’s make this happen.

3) Outdoor permit fees represent a lot of money to a street trader. Conversely, they represent very little in the scheme of the city’s finances.

4) The parking time limits were recently reduced from 2 hours to 1 hour. I’m not sure what consultation went into this but it doesn’t seem popular.

5) This precinct is in the border of Whitehorse with some confusion around whether it’s in Mont Albert or Surrey Hills or even Balwyn. This could be better highlighted with appropriate signage.

Come on down and say hi to Ken and the team. Coffee’s great and always served with a smile.
