Since opening UNA UNA, we’ve quietly been trying to tell a different story about Box Hill. Not to change what makes this neighbourhood special, but to remind people that Box Hill is more than just “Melbourne’s second Chinatown.”

Its incredible Asian food is part of its identity, but not the whole story.

Building a Western neighbourhood café and bistro here has sometimes felt like swimming against the current. It’s been tiring, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding.

We’re grateful to the neighbours and regulars who have welcomed us from day one. You’ve shown us there’s room for something different.

There’s still a long way to go, but we’ll keep advocating for a more diverse dining scene—one where great food, whatever the cuisine, has a place in Box Hill.

Whenever people think of Box Hill, they think of Asian eateries—and for good reason. It’s one of Melbourne’s best food destinations. But Box Hill is more than that, just as Melbourne’s CBD isn’t only about Chinatown.

There’s a Chinese saying about “being the first to eat the crab” (第一个吃螃蟹的人)—it means having the courage to do something new. That’s what we set out to do.

We opened a Western neighbourhood bistro in the heart of Box Hill. Not Asian. Not fusion. Just food we believe in, served with genuine hospitality.

Congratulations to all the restaurants, especially small independent businesses, mentioned in the Broadsheet’s Best Restaurants in Box Hill article. We won’t pretend it isn’t a little disappointing not being recognised. But we’re also incredibly grateful for what matters most: the support of this neighbourhood, the guests who keep coming back, and the 4.9-star rating you’ve given us on Google.

We’ll keep doing what we’ve always done—cooking honest food, welcoming people warmly, and proving that Box Hill’s dining scene has room for more than one story.

Have you ever tried our specialty coffee? Why special? We make our alternative milk options in-house and rotate them on a regular basis. Salted cashew nuts, walnuts, chestnuts, pistachio, pecan… often topped with oat milk to give iced latte extra layers of flavour, creamy texture and richness .

When our photographer sent these through, they were tucked inside a folder called “Kitchen Vibe.” It made me smile.

To most people, a kitchen is where the magic happens. To us, it’s heat, smoke, precision, a bit of chaos, and a whole lot of hard work.

Not the kind of vibe you see on social media, but the one that puts every plate on the table.

This is the real kitchen vibe at UNA UNA. 🔥
