All my Christmases came at once at the Canning Show Awards Night when I received my certificate for Champion Decorated Cakes but also won the Ernest & Joan Clark Perpetual Trophy for Best Exhibit in Home Cooking! It was a real surprise to be awarded this year’s Perpetual Champion for Home Cooking - totally unexpected!

Very pleased with the result - 1st prize in the Novelty Cake category and overall cake decorating competition champion!

This cake is my ode to the essential workers who have met us safe during this pandemic. It was meant to be my entry to the Perth Royal Show but I didn’t complete it in time. So instead, I entered it into the Canning Show.

There are 24 figurines, representing the various essential workers. It was a lot of work but this is my way of thanking those members of my family, friends and colleagues who are essential workers. Thank you for all you do!

A typical cheeky 5 year old boy, our grandson Jamie wanted a monster cake for his birthday but he also wanted the monster to show his bottom (5 year old bum jokes)!

So I made him this monster cake in his favourite colour, with a sour worm coming out of its bottom. Because the cake had sour worms, snakes and lizards in a hollowed out section inside the cake, the story was that the monster’s tummy was filled with worms, snakes and lizards, hence the worm in the bottom 😂.

Jamie no doubt was chuffed!

The first cake I made for my godson Mikhail was for his christening, and then went on to make many more cakes celebrating milestones in his life. This weekend, I had the honour of making a cake for his most important milestone thus far, as he married his lovely bride, Laureta.

This 7 tier cake reflected the theme colours of their wedding and the bride's bouquet and had a hidden slice of the groom's favourite chocolate cake for the couple to cut. Guests were gifted with the bride's choice of a semolina butter cake encased in a beautiful blue lace pouch.

Congratulations, Mik and Laura! Wishing you love and happiness always!

Merry Christmas from the team at Gerry and the Cakemaker! This Aussie inspired Christmas cake was for the Joseph family who will be celebrating with their extended family today. They chose quintessential Australian summer flavours i.e. a coconut cake layered with pineapple curd and topped with lime buttercream.

There’s always a first time for everything and today’s cake is a first for me trying a Malaysian favourite. This gula Melaka (Palm sugar) sponge is layered and covered with a Pandan Kaya (custard made with coconut milk). The cake is topped with Chinese love letter cookie scrolls and the Malaysian Julie’s peanut butter cookies.

Making cakes for family is great because the cake can be a bit wonky and the decorating doesn’t need to be fantastic. The cake was a lime and coconut flavour, layered with lime curd and cherries soaked in coconut liqueur, topped with coconut buttercream.

This cake was for my 2 brothers-in-law and a nephew, all footy fans, each supporting a different team. So Freo, West Coast and Bombers got their colours in, with my wish for a 2020 Western Derby grand finals with Freo winning. Actually 75 & 71 are my brothers in law’s ages.
