You don’t need a multi-thousand-dollar commercial setup to get cafe-quality glossy milk and espresso at home. Sometimes it just down to a few tiny adjustments in your routine.

If your home lattes have been tasting a bit bitter or looking more like soapy foam than microfoam, here are 5 game-changing tweaks that can help you turn it around:

1. Weighting over guessing
Ditching the scoop and using a small digital scale to weigh the coffee grounds (and the liquid espresso yield) changed everything. Aiming for a 1:2 ratio (e.g., 20g of coffee in, 40f of espresso out) creates a consistent baseline every single morning.

2. Purging and wiping the steam wand
Always purge the wand before you put it into the milk to get rid of any trapped condensation water, and wipe/purge immediately after. It stops crusty milk build-up and keeps the steam pressure clean.

3. Texturing consistentl
When stretching the milk, only keep the very tip of the steam wand submerged. Keep it there just until the pitcher feels like room temperature (gaining that silky microfoam volume), then plunge it slightly deeper and tilt the jug to create a rolling whirlpool to polish the bubbles out.

4. Swirling the espresso
Don’t let your espresso sit and separate while you steam your milk. Giving your espresso shot glass a good swirl right before pouring breaks up the crema and blends the flavors, making the base much smoother when the milk hits it.

5. Switching to freshly roasted beans from BOM Cafe Baldivis
The absolute truth? You can have perfect technique, but you can’t get beautiful, rich crema or sweet microfoam using stale beans. Switching to fresh specialty beans from the BOM counter completely transformed the flavor profile and made latte art a breeze.
