Everything in the market world is trial and error, and we’ve definitely made our fair share of mistakes! 😅 Hopefully these tips help you avoid some of them.
1. Make it obvious what you sell🍓
Your marquee should clearly say what you’re selling. A-frames are great, but once the crowds arrive they’re often hidden by people walking past.
Your stall needs to stand out because you’re competing with so many other vendors for the customers attention.
One of our favourite things to hear as people walk past is, “Yum... fresh strawberries drizzled in Belgian chocolate!” If they know what you’re selling before they reach your stall, you’ve already caught their interest.
2. The weather will make or break your day 🌦️
Always check the forecast and plan your stock accordingly. Over-prepping might seem like the safer option, but if you don’t sell it, that loss comes straight off your profit.
We’ve learnt that even if it only rains before the market starts, many people make other dinner plans or decide to stay home altogether.
3. Your regular customers are your greatest asset ❤️
Don’t build your business expecting family and friends to keep supporting you. They’ll usually visit once or twice (and often ask for a discount! 😂). Instead, focus on looking after your regular customers. They’re the ones who come back week after week, support you through rain, hail or shine, and often become friends along the way.
4. Keep your setup as simple as possible 📦
When you’re packing, unpacking, setting up and packing down every single market, a practical setup makes all the difference. We’ve simplified our stall over time to make market days quicker, easier and far less stressful.
5. More markets doesn’t always mean more money 💰
This was a hard lesson to learn. Saying yes to every event doesn’t necessarily increase your income. You can spend every weekend at markets and still not make a profit.
Choosing markets that suit your business, your products and your ideal customers is far more important than simply doing more of them.
We’d love to know—if you’re a market stall owner, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt? 👇
