Did you know Australia grows coffee, too?
I ordered green coffee beans from Skybury, QLD, and brought them back to Taiwan to let News try roasting them and see what this Australian coffee would taste like. If I ever have the chance to roast my own beans in the future, I might blend in some Australian-grown coffee. (The beans were declared at customs.)
The first roast wasn’t very successful. This wasn’t a variety she was very familiar with. It was also probably the first-time roasting coffee grown at a relatively low altitude. She had to search through her experience and knowledge to figure out how to bring out the best flavours. The second roast was adjusted, and the third roast was fine-tuned again.
When News made me a latte with the roasted Australian coffee bean and handed it to me, she asked, “What do you think?” I answered, “A clean latte.”
I probably don’t have a lot of vocabulary when it comes to describing coffee flavours. But after repeatedly tasting this Australian single origin as a pour-over, as a latte, and as a 50/50 blend with Mandheling, I realized that many coffee lovers tend to define flavour, acidity, and body by the altitude where the coffee is grown. Maybe this isn’t a coffee that chases an intense flavour experience. But it has a sense of steadiness that comes from the Australian land.
To me, this is an everyday coffee.
A feeling of Australia…
