Friday, August 21, 2020 – Finjaan la Lubnan (A Cup for Lebanon)
On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion tore through Beirut, killing at least 200 people, injuring more than 6000 and destroying thousands of homes, businesses and one of Beirut’s largest hospitals. This catastrophic event could not have happened at a worse time for Lebanon as it faces an unprecedented economic crisis which has left more than half the population of Lebanon living in poverty and hospitals without the capacity to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.
The dire situation in Lebanon hits home at Union Street Café as we are part of a large Lebanese family, many of whom still live in Beirut. They, along with hundreds of thousands of Beirut residents, are directly affected by the impact of the August 4 explosion and economic crisis.
So, on Friday, August 21, we invite you to buy a coffee (finjaan kahwe) for a cause as we are donating 100% of our food and beverage proceeds to emergency campaigns to support those worst affected by the crises in Lebanon.
We will be donating to:
Al Fanar’s Lebanon Appeal. Al Fanar is working directly with its partners in Lebanon to support food distribution, debris clean-up and reconstruction and ongoing support to critical social enterprises. 100% of funds donated to Al Fanar go directly to support organizations on the ground and their assistance to Lebanon’s most vulnerable. You can learn more about Al Fanar’s Lebanon Appeal at https://www.alfanar.org/emergencylebanon.
Oxfam International Crisis Fund - Lebanon Emergency. The full impact of this latest disaster is now escalating with an imminent shortage of food and medical supplies for both Lebanese citizens and non-Lebanese residents, including hundreds of thousands of Syrian and Palestinian refugees. Oxfam’s Lebanon team is working with local NGOs to support the most vulnerable living in Lebanon, among them Lebanon’s most poor, the elderly and disabled, survivors of gender based violence, refugees and migrant workers. You can learn more about Oxfam’s Lebanon appeal at: https://secure.oxfam.org.au/donate/international-crisis-fund
The Architect’s Initiative. This is a personal and immediate initiative by a volunteer group of Lebanese architects and contractors. The team is on the ground helping the elderly and destitute whose homes have been shattered and who do not have the resources to rebuild. The team is visiting identified households and has already started work on repairs and reconstruction.
If you would like to specify your contribution or an additional donation go to a particular appeal, please tell a member of our team. Otherwise, we will distribute the proceeds between these three appeals.
We hope to see you for a finjaan la lubnan this Friday.
