In the 19th century, a physician named Samuel A. Cartwright infamously “diagnosed” a supposed mental illness called drapetomania—which he claimed caused enslaved Black people to run away from their masters. According to Cartwright, the natural desire for freedom was actually a form of madness that could be “cured” through harsh discipline and control. 🛑

This pseudo-scientific concept is a stark example of how racist ideologies were disguised as science to justify the brutal institution of slavery. Drapetomania was not based on any real medical evidence but was used to rationalize the inhumane treatment of enslaved people and maintain the power dynamics of the time. ⚖️
