Eazay is traditionally made with thingey, a locally-grown peppercorn known to the rest of the world as Szechuan peppercorn. The backing heat of the peppercorn and the red chillies makes this condiment a perfect one to have in winter, but also possibly a shock to palettes that aren’t used to the level of spice the Bhutanese love. The beauty of ezay is that it heightens the clean flavours of Bhutanese cuisines, despite the sharpness of the spices.

Prayer Flag Room
Be it in blistering winds or a gentle breeze, ‘Lung Dhar’ or prayer flags, allow prayers and blessings that are inscribed on them to be transported through the wind. These prayers and blessings, in the form of auspicious and sacred symbols, mantras and invocations, are carried through the wind that moves them, pervading the vicinity and all sentient beings with their blessings.
Each color of prayer flag represents one of the five elements, with white symbolizing the air and the winds. Though over time those same elements fade inscriptions from sight, the prayers become a permanent part of the universe.
The prayer flag room also features pieces by two Bhutanese artists, photographer Siseer ( ) and sketch artist Karma ( ). All proceeds of sale of all artwork displayed at Phangu go directly and wholly towards the respective artists.

The Mask Room
‘Raksha Mangcham’, translated to ‘Dance of Judgement Day’ is a masked dance which portray the full trial system after death that takes place in the court of the Lord of Death.
The intricate dance features its three most prominent characters, Shinje Chhogyel (Lord of Death), Lha Karpo (White God), and Dreynakchung (Black Demon) who come together to bring to life the reality of death.
The Lord of Death with a fearful crimson face and three eyes, signals who is dead from the world as the deceased deed’s are reckoned. Every sin and every merit, from birth to death are recorded and when in Bardo (intermediate state), are measured. The Black Demon represents evil, a modern day prosecutor of the dead. While the White God pleads circumstances for sins and describes merits.
All of this takes place in the presence of the Shinjey and a full court of attendants, who present evidence, listen to the charges for and against and ultimately, participate in the process of judgment.

The Mural Room
Murals in Buddhism often tell stories and are in part truly brought to life by mythological creatures that symbolize spiritual teachings.
In the realms below the land and sea, Nagas are the underworld guardians of treasure and teachings, manifesting in serpent-like forms. In direct juxtaposition, their sworn enemy the Garuda that was hatched from space and ready to fly, soars in the realm above, representing fearlessness, power and wisdom.
The Garuda is the directional guardian of the North[a], and one of ‘Four Dignities’ which together represent the qualities a Bodhisattva develops on their path to enlightenment. The Snow Lion in the East symbolizes vitality, lightness and purity, the Tiger in the South symbolizes confidence, discipline and modesty, and the Dragon in the South represents elegance, generosity and calmness. More commonly and affectionately referred to collectively as ‘Tak, Seng, Chung and Druk’ in Bhutan, these deities protect the Dharma and are often depicted in monasteries, on exterior walls of homes or in a modern twist, are used in advertising.
While the Garuda and Nagas may inhabit separate realms as enemies, the Makara snail represents the harmonious union of a water monster most easily associated with a crocodile and its traditional prey; the conch or water snail. It closely resembles a hermit crab, destroying the mollusk and inhabiting its new home, illustrating the circularity as life feeds on life.
