Good post. Who else reading this is a First Nations person in support of Alberta independence?
This is from a First Nations person who replied under one of our posts and it's worth highlighting; thanks so much to them for their input!
It would be great to hear from other First Nations people who agree that Alberta independence could very well be a VERY GOOD THING for their people (and all Albertans:)
'The audacity so many of you have trying to speak for all as an individual is only surpassed by the chiefs! My chief had ZERO consultation with his people before getting up with the other "leaders" and denouncing the idea... ironic eh? What I don't understand is why would these "leaders" not want to at least hear a proposal as to what things could look like if they backed the movement.
We own no land, the small sections of our reserves are held in trust as if we're children not yet ready for the responsibility of ownership.
The treaties as originally signed use such racist and oppressive language... "the queens good indians"... does that sit well with you? The indian act, residential schools, genocides of the past... these were all perpetrated by the same entities and institutions that so many of you are so suddenly loyal to!
When Joey Pete flew to London to kiss the ring and beg for the king's help with the mean separatists, did you applaud? That is the same bloodline that ordered our extinction... but we persevered, and they had to make a deal... but at great cost to us generations later.
What if, we could retain the rights we currently have that matter in 2026... self governance, access to education/Healthcare, harvesting rights, tax exemptions and of course funding... if those were guaranteed to remain what would the downside be?
The land is gone, it's never being returned without all out war (that we won't win), is this about compensation from revenue generated from the land(earned or not)?
I've been off reserve about 20 years now, and I can tell you, reserve life should be far better than it currently is! The "leaders" have failed us, and in many cases, we have failed ourselves. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result... maybe it's time for a paradigm shift from within.
Maybe its time for our "leaders" stop wasting time and resources fighting for our past and start fighting for our future!"
