Alberta's push for sovereignty, as championed by Danielle Smith, faces a major hurdle: taxation. Unlike Quebec, which collects its own taxes and can thus challenge federal laws in court, Alberta currently only collects corporate tax. Ottawa collects most of Alberta's provincial and federal taxes. Without this financial leverage, Alberta's ability to assert sovereignty is significantly weakened, undermining the entire argument.

Danielle Smith's claim of a $400 billion cost for a change is fear-mongering. Most estimates are far lower. For perspective, Brexit cost the UK an estimated $40-50 billion, and that involved multiple countries and more people.
