Thank You, Chestermere.
This isn’t the post I wanted to write, but sadly, we must let you know that Township 24 has reached the end of the road and will be closing its doors today for the last time.
Getting to know all of you — not just as customers but as friends — has been the greatest pleasure of my professional life. You took us in and made Township a part of this community, and I will be forever grateful. When we opened the doors to the taproom on a cold afternoon in December 2017, one of our first customers told me they enjoyed the beer and the atmosphere, but they also bumped into a neighbour they hadn’t seen in a few years. They ended up catching up over a few pints and had a great visit. I knew then that we had the potential to create something special — a place not just to catch up with old friends, but to discover new ones.
From open mic nights with the Hooligans, to burlesque in the loft, to Irish stew on St. Patrick’s Day, to a high-stakes late-night foot race in the parking lot — this place held its own unique magic. From Wing Wednesday to Seniors’ Sunday, I’m not sure there was anywhere quite like Township.
I would like to give a huge thank you to the staff who made Township what it was. First, Curtis Metzger, who was with me from day one and turned out award-winning beers year after year that put Township — and Chestermere — on the map. Thank you.
To the taproom and kitchen staff — you were the face of Township. You worked other jobs, had other passions, and in many cases were busy raising a family on top of everything else. But you showed up every night to pour “just one more,” listen to our stories, and hold court while we discussed the latest from city hall. You’re the hardest-working and most thoughtful group of people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Thank you.
I am hopeful we’ll see someone with their own brand of creativity and passion step in to fill the void and give the community something special. But for now, this is goodbye. I hope you all find that friend — or even better, that stranger — you can share a pint with. Be sure to tell them about Township, then tell them, “You wouldn’t understand — you kinda had to be there.”
A friend of mine once told me, sometimes “it’s just time.” I don’t think I understood then, but I think I do now.
Thank you.
