IT’S HAPPENING /// We’re open on Tuesdays and today is Tuesday. I’m typing this message from the restaurant! Not all of these posts can be chock full of deluded ramblings, so that’s gonna have to be it. See you later!

WE ARE NOW OPEN ON TUESDAYS /// We planned to do this a few months ago but were unable due to universal forces beyond our control. We’re lucky to have an incredible group of people working with us at the shop, and they’re the ones making this possible. That’s only part of the update, amigos: we’re also going to switching our hours to line up with human behaviour throughout the fall and winter. What does that mean? It means we’ll be open 11:30-8:00 Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, and then 11:30-9:00 Friday/Saturday/Sunday. That’s the deal, probably until spring. Hopefully this message finds the people who really need to know when we’re open. It’s also on the Google and the sign posted outside of the restaurant. See some of you tomorrow, probably :)

ARE WE THERE YET /// If it’s Wednesday October 14th, then it’s the big day - most of us are rejuvenated and are returning to the confines of the restaurant to ply our trade. Some of us are still very far away, investigating the secret origins of the sauce. It’s me. I’m the one who is away and I’m having a wonderful time. Some people sent wishes of love and support while we rested and played - thank you to those who understand that this restaurant is actually just a bunch of people who are spending their days together to make a few delicious things as best they can. There are requests for more, of course: more menu, more hours, more days. We are fortunate that anyone will even up with what we provide. More of all that could lead to more of other things, but what if it meant less? Less time, energy, focus, or even joy? That’s the fear, my dear. Anywho, that was a lovely little break. See you all after 11:30am but before 9:00pm, Wednesday to Sunday.

VACATION MODE /// We can’t work all the time all year round. It’s ok to get rest and this is how we get it. We want you to rest, too. You probably work hard and have a lot going on. That can be stressful. We know, from experience. Anywho, we will return to work next week with an increased willingness to hustle in exchange for money. This break is our little treat for the past six months of hustling. Would we make more money if we were to be open every day all year? Yes. But that sounds horrible and antithetical to hospitality. How could we possibly engage in the business of looking after people if we don’t look after ourselves? Ok. No more work stuff. Gotta go do other things. See you later, kids!

TWO MORE DAYS /// Before we have a much deserved break. We do this every year and we really try to warn people about it but we’re never able to adequately communicate. There are always confused voicemails and smudges on the glass from people peering into our slumbering restaurant. That doesn’t mean we won’t try to spread the word. That’s what this is: effort. Anywho, the last six months were a grind for us and probably every other restaurant person. We try to solve that by getting rest. It helps. We’re here today and tomorrow and then away until Wednesday’s October 15th. Tell your friends!

SEPTEMBER 30 /// We won’t be open this Wednesday. You can find me at the Comox Valley Spirit Walk. Where’s that happening? Harmston Park, in Courtenay. What time does it start? 10am. We’ll be back on Thursday, friends.

THIS COULD BE YOU /// We’re in need of some full time hamburger help in the kitchen. Do you need a bunch of experience? Not really! Is that because it’s really easy and anyone can do it? Nope! It’s because we’re mostly interested in hiring great people who want to be taught to do things the way we do them around here. Will there be opportunities for advancement? Almost certainly! There are a few key roles here at the shop, and the goal is to provide everyone an opportunity to become capable in all areas of the kitchen. Will this job help me own my own restaurant someday? It wouldn’t hurt! There are decades of experience in the building, complete with a couple of Red Seal certifications - we’re in our ninth year of business, and have worked in numerous successful restaurants throughout our careers. Do you get two additional paid weeks off per year? Yep! Why though? Because it’s important to get rest. Will you need to work evenings and weekends and be available through the busiest periods of the year? Absolutely - restaurants are busiest when most people are out and about having a good time (summer, local events, long weekends etc). This post is getting a bit long. Important details: starting wage $20 per hour plus great tips, flexible health and wellness spending account, free meals on shift, discounted meals when you’re a guest, AND you’ll be working with so many lovely humans. There’s probably more but my thumbs are exhausted from all this phone typing. Bring resumes to the shop when we’re open, or send a DM for our very cool email address. Byeeeeeeee!

LOST /// Chris had some of these made because he’s a big golf guy and I have been dabbling in golf. We weren’t supposed to use them because then we’d lose them and people would find them and realize that the people who own Cooks are the kind of golfers that lose golf balls. Anywho, it happened. I’m the one who lost the ball. We have more and would probably sell you a couple if you would also like to lose them on the golf course. Ok? Thank you!

JOIN US /// We haven’t added to the squadron in a while. Is it because this is a good place to work? That’s not really for me to say, but I will admit that we put a lot of time and effort into making it so. There are cool perks like free meals, great tips, a health and wellness spending account, and 2 additional weeks of paid vacation per year (a total of 4 weeks!). We offer a starting wage of $19/hour. Pass this sucker along if you think you know a person who would get along with us :)

EIGHTISH /// They say that people shouldn’t open restaurants. They say they usually fail. They say that you should be careful or you will end up flipping burgers for a living. We didn’t listen. We weren’t careful. We’re still here. It has been very cool and fun cooking for you. Some of you have become people we recognize. We may even remember your names. We even remember some of your preferences. That’s what you get for coming here so often, so regularly. My favourite part of all of this has been working with the people who have decided to join us. Anywho, the real burger birthday is tomorrow and we won’t be open. Thank you to the academy. Thank you to our families. Thank you to our friends. Thank you to you. ❤️
