541 Eatery & Exchange is a pay-it-forward cafe working to help our neighbours overcome the impacts of isolation, poverty, and injustice by cultivating a community of mutuality in our neighbourhood. Happy Pride, Hamilton! The world is better because you're in it. Your stories, your love, your joy, and your presence matter.

Rooted in our Christian faith, we believe every single person is worthy of dignity and belonging. Radical hospitality is at the heart of what we do. A warm meal and a seat at the table for every neighbour who walks through our door. We know finding safe spaces hasn't always been easy for folks in the LGBTQ2S+ community. We want to be one of those spaces, not just in June, but every day of the year.

Today is World Hunger Day. In Hamilton specifically, food bank use has grown by more than 50% since 2021. But hunger isn't random. It falls hardest on folks already navigating systemic barriers. People are struggling because wages are too low, grocery prices are rising, and support systems are stretched thin.

If you're looking for ways to get involved or support the work happening right here in Hamilton, here are some organizations worth knowing:

✨ Right To Food Canada - a national organization tackling food insecurity
✨ Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre - accessible, people-centred health and community services
✨ Canadian Mental Health Association, Hamilton Branch - mental health support, because food insecurity and mental health are deeply connected
✨ Helping Hands Street Mission - a hub for folks facing social, financial and spiritual poverty
✨ Hamilton Food Share - a city hub for hunger relief, supporting 22 programs across Hamilton

The Board of Directors at 541 is seeking new members, with a particular interest in candidates with experience and skills in governance, finance, and/or risk management. They are also seeking folks to join the Board Committee. Relevant lived experiences and connections to networks that can support 541 are also considered assets.

Update: thanks to folks like you, we’ve received enough donations to replace our window on Tuesday! Any additional donations received will go towards our operating expenses so that we can keep our doors open. Thank you thank you thank you to our incredible community ❤️

Our window got smashed today. It’s not the news we wanted to share, but here we are 😞

Barton Street has been home for a long time, and moments like this one sting. But this community has always shown up for us, and we’re not about to let a broken window change that. We’ll be open tomorrow as usual and we’d love to see some familiar faces.
