We caught Wolseley aggressively nibbling his toes like they’re the world’s tiniest corn on the cob!

Don’t worry, he’s not actually eating his feet! Those funny little nibbles are just part of a cat’s grooming routine. They use their front teeth to work through little tangles, clean between their toes, and keep every inch of themselves looking fabulous.

As impressive as their self-care routine is, they still need a helping hand! Regular brushing removes loose fur, helps prevent painful mats, reduces hairballs, and keeps their coat healthy and comfortable. If you have a long-haired cat, brushing is especially important, as their coats can tangle much faster than they can groom them themselves.

So let your cat handle the toe corn… and you handle the brush. It’s a team effort.

Summer has officially arrived… and the cats have declared it sunbeam season. ☀️🐱

You’ll find our kitties doing what they do best: stretched out in warm patches of sunshine, napping, lounging, and soaking up every ray they can find. If the summer heat gets to be a little much, don’t worry, our A/C is blasting to keep the lounge nice and cool for both you and the cats.

Come escape the heat, grab a drink, and spend some time with 30+ adoptable cats. Who knows… you might just leave with a new best friend. 🩷

It’s nail trim day at Catelowna! 💅🐾

We have plenty of tips and tricks to help keep all those tiny murder mittens looking pristine… but let’s just say there are usually a few casualties along the way. 🫠 A couple of scratches and receiving the silent treatment afterwards are a small price to pay for healthy paws.

If your cat isn’t a fan of nail trims, here are a few things that can make life easier:
🐾 Start handling their paws regularly, even when you’re not trimming their nails. The more normal it feels, the less stressful it becomes.
🐾 Trim after a play session or nap when they’re feeling relaxed, not when they’re zooming around the house.
🐾 Don’t feel like you have to do every nail at once. One paw, or even one nail, is still progress!
🐾 Reward every trim with treats, wet food, or their favourite toy so they learn that good things happen afterward.
🐾 Use sharp cat nail clippers and ONLY trim the clear tip of the nail. Avoid the pink “quick,” which contains blood vessels and nerves. Start by trimming long, you can take more off later but you can’t put it back!
🐾 If your cat is especially wiggly, having a second person offer treats or gently wrapping them in a towel can make the process much less stressful for everyone.

Most indoor cats benefit from a nail trim every 2-3 weeks, although every cat is different and may need more or less often. Keeping nails short helps prevent painful overgrowth, stops nails from snagging on blankets and carpets, reduces accidental scratches, and in senior cats can even prevent nails from growing into the paw pads.

Your cat may file a formal complaint with HR afterward… but we promise they’ll forgive you eventually. ❤️🐱

“Are they playing or are they fighting?” is one of the most common questions we get from cat parents!

The truth is that cat play can look pretty dramatic. Chasing, pouncing, wrestling, bunny kicks, and even the occasional sideways “Halloween cat” can all be perfectly normal play behavior.

So how can you tell the difference?

🐾 Play is usually quiet. Cats may chirp or make little noises, but real fights are often LOUD, with growling, yowling, hissing, and screaming.

🐾 Play has give and take. The cats take turns chasing, wrestling, and being “the winner.” In a fight, one cat is often trying to escape while the other won’t let up.

🐾 Look at the whole interaction, not just one body language cue. Pinned ears, puffed-up fur, and sideways postures can happen during play too. What matters is whether both cats seem relaxed and willing to continue engaging.

🐾 Cats who are playing usually choose to come back for more. Cats who are fighting tend to avoid each other afterward.

In this video, Mia is doing her best “BOO! I’m so scary!” impression, complete with her Halloween-cat posture. But Ophelia responds by flopping over, showing her belly, keeping her ears forward, and staying engaged. The interaction is balanced, relaxed, and completely silent, all signs that these girls are just having fun.

When in doubt, ask yourself: are both cats choosing to play the game? If the answer is yes, you’re probably watching roughhousing, not a fight.

Poor Dr. Wolseley. Every time we need a star for social media, somehow he ends up volunteered. 😹

Don’t worry, it’s all in good fun (and we pay him in treats and attention). While Wolseley may be the face of many of our posts, he’s just one of the 30+ rescue cats waiting to meet you at Catelowna!

Come visit the kitties, grab a drink, and support cat rescue. 🫶🐈🐈‍⬛

🚨 Experienced Cat Hand Needed 🚨

We're looking for a very special foster-to-adopt home for a few of our most misunderstood residents.

💙 Winter is a stunning silver tabby with a heart hidden behind a wall of fear and insecurity. Life in a busy cat lounge just isn't her cup of tea, and her stress can make her seem much spicier than she really is. We've seen glimpses of the sweet girl underneath. What she needs is someone who understands cats, someone patient, gentle, and willing to help her learn that people can be trusted. She could live with another cat, provided they're calm and respectful.

💙 Timothy & Judith have been with us for an astonishing 2.5 years. Through no fault of their own, they got stuck in quarantine when they first arrived, then lost valuable rehabilitation time during our ringworm outbreak. Whatever happened before they came to us left deep scars, but they have come so far. Today, we can pet them. They'll sleep with you. Timothy will come sit beside you on the couch and chat away in the cutest little voice. Judith remains the shyer of the pair, but she's an absolute sweetheart. Both have the potential to become wonderfully affectionate companions in the right home.

These aren't turnkey cats. They won't be climbing into a stranger's lap on day one. But for someone with patience, understanding, and a big heart, they could be incredibly rewarding companions. These are the cats that often get overlooked, but they're also the ones whose transformations can be the most magical. ✨🐾

Is there someone out there willing to take a chance on these special souls and show them what it feels like to truly belong? ❤️

Please reach out if you think you might be the person they're waiting for. [email protected]
