Arepa ink is permanently closed.

Today is the beginning of something new. 🙌🏽

For us, this year has been one we will never forget. It has been a concentrated year of learning, adapting and reinventing. We are very proud of everything we accomplished from the financial stats, the social reach, but most of all the THOUSANDS of Arepas sold and the ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ reviews on google!

We set out to introduce London to The Arepa and make you LOVE it 💛💚💖

We know we succeeded in that and there is such satisfaction in that feeling! 🚀

Beginning and operating our business through three COVID lockdowns, filled with uncertainties and restrictions was a challenge we took head on. 💪🏾 We were happy to adapt and celebrated the organic flow of it all. Until its last day, we loved what we did. 💃🏾💃🏾

Now we'd like to take a moment to celebrate some of our accomplishments during our one (1) year in operation. 🍾

This is us, raw and unrehearsed, sharing with you one of the biggest decisions we’ve made.

This partnership, this year, all of it has been an intense masters in entrepreneurship for us both. Our skill level when we began vs. today is outstanding. We are ready for the future filled with butterflies, but with the conviction that all possible options will be amazing!

🇨🇦In Venezuela we say,

“Nadie te quita lo bailado”.

In English; “Nobody can take from you what you’ve already danced”.

We encourage you to adopt this as a life mantra. 🙌🏽 What it tries to remind us (usually at challenging times) is that no matter what hardships await, the moments we have enjoyed and their learnings will always remain. The value of that is to put into perspective the situation, its transitory timing ⏳(nothing is forever) and highlight the positive when a decision turned out to be a double-edged sword.

For us at Arepa ink, this year has been one of growth and learning🌱. It has been filled with adventures, triumphs, choices and opportunities and as most women of the world, we played many roles. 👩🏾‍🤝‍👩🏽We are mother, partner, wife, professional, friend, community member, sister, daughter…while within Arepa ink we were sales, marketing, procurement, operations, clean up crew, development, HR and well you get the idea. We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to go “all in” and also to have the privilege to stop and make the best decision for us, our families and our general well being.

However, after much thought, we have made the decision to permanently close Arepa ink.

🇨🇦 Today’s Arepa Story is for our Arepa Heroes and Arepa Lovers Guille and Gabi!

This is our last Friday of the year and thus we have to share the spotlight. Though it seems fitting to do so to celebrate and share about our integral team members Guille and Gabi.

Guille came to us through a program at LEADS. He needed someone to give him a chance as he could only work a few hours a day. We met him and decided to try. He quickly made us laugh and soon, we looked forward to his arrival at the end of the day with his unique, happy disposition that gets any human out of any dark day. He now works everyday with us and we struggle to imagine our days without him. Thankfully, he is now a friend and an absolute Arepa Lover ordering without fail every week!

Now Gabi helped us out when we first started on Saturdays when we couldn’t do it just the two of us. She then did some training and finished school. Through a program that supports newcomers, we received a grant for her! She started full time in the middle of the madness, with little to no training, but with all the perseverance to make it! We like to think we’ve taught her a thing or two, but the truth is we’d be lost without her. From her crazy razy questions, to her forever love for Ozuna and simple joys, we will miss sharing a 188 sq ft box with her.

These people have been absolutely integral to everything we do and it has been an absolute growth opportunity, and measure of resilience, filled with perspective to learn and work with them.

🇻🇪 ¡La Arepa historia de hoy es para nuestros Arepa héroes y Arepa Lovers, Guille y Gabi!

Este es nuestro último viernes del año y, por lo tanto, tenemos que compartir el protagonismo. Aunque parece apropiado hacerlo para celebrar y compartir sobre los miembros integrales de nuestro equipo, Guille y Gabi.

Guille vino a nosotros a través de un programa en LEADS. Necesitaba que alguien le diera una oportunidad, ya que solo podía trabajar unas pocas horas al día. Lo conocimos y decidimos intentarlo. Rápidamente nos hizo reír y pronto, esperamos su llegada al final del día con su disposición única y feliz que saca a cualquier humano de cualquier día oscuro. Ahora trabaja todos los días con nosotras y nos cuesta imaginar nuestros días sin él. ¡Afortunadamente, ahora es un amigo y un absoluto amante de la arepa que ordena sin falta todas las semanas!

Ahora Gabi nos ayudó cuando comenzamos los sábados cuando no podíamos hacerlo solo nosotras dos. Luego hizo un entrenamiento y terminó el bachiller. A través de un programa que apoya a los recién llegados, ¡recibimos una subvención para ella! Comenzó a tiempo completo en medio de la locura, con poco o ningún entrenamiento, ¡pero con toda la perseverancia para lograrlo! Nos gusta pensar que le hemos enseñado un par de cosas, pero la verdad es que estaríamos perdidas sin ella. Desde sus locas preguntas, hasta su amor eterno por Ozuna y sus simples alegrías, extrañaremos compartir una caja de 188 pies cuadrados con ella.

Estas personas han sido absolutamente parte integral de todo lo que hacemos y ha sido una oportunidad de crecimiento absoluto y una medida de resiliencia, llena de perspectiva para aprender y trabajar con ellos.

🇨🇦 All our Arepas sell well. We do not have any sad bystanders here. However, those who seek comfort, that sense of belonging, safety and warmth tend to stick to The Camila and The Marcela.

The Marcela is our Arepa filled with our fresh and crisp tuna salad topped with peppery arugula. While The Camila is our take on Venezuela’s most popular Arepa (The reina pepiada) which is filled with our signature chicken salad and topped with avocado slices.

Making every single Arepa for you has been an incredible opportunity to showcase our passion, our flavours and our personality. We hope that each bite has imprinted a permanent memory on your palate and maybe even in your heart.

🇻🇪 Todas nuestras Arepas se venden bien. No tenemos espectadores tristes aquí. Sin embargo, quienes buscan comodidad, ese sentido de pertenencia, seguridad y calidez suelen apegarse a La Camila y La Marcela.

La Marcela es nuestra Arepa rellena con ensalada de atún fresca y crujiente cubierta con arugula. Mientras que La Camila es nuestra versión de la arepa más popular de Venezuela (La reina pepiada), que se rellena con nuestra ensalada de pollo y se cubre con rodajas de aguacate.

Hacer cada Arepa para ustedes ha sido una oportunidad increíble para demostrar nuestra pasión, nuestros sabores y nuestra personalidad. Esperamos que cada bocado haya dejado un recuerdo permanente en su paladar y tal vez incluso en su corazón.

🇨🇦 We love every Arepa we make. However, when it is your first time eating an Arepa we will always advise you to “stick to the classics”.

Consistently, our top sellers week after week have been The Luciana and The Sofia.

We just love that the top sellers are a vegetarian/vegan and a meat filled Arepa!

The Luciana is our extraordinary sofrito shredded flank topped with old cheddar and The Sofia is filled with our unique caraotas (black beans), fried plantains, avocado slices and feta (or vegan tex-mex) cheese.

These are options that we hope will always make you savour, eat bite and take a moment to enjoy it all.

For us, each time we write those names in your Arepa boxes our hearts skip a beat, since they are (along with The Marcela and The Camila) named after our girls, our fuel.

🇻🇪 Amamos cada arepa que hacemos. Sin embargo, cuando es la primera vez que comes una Arepa, siempre te aconsejamos que escojas dentro de “las clásicas”.

Constantemente, nuestras Arepas más vendidas semana tras semana han sido La Luciana y La Sofía.

¡Nos encanta que las más vendidas sean una vegetariana/vegana y una arepa rellena de carne!

La Luciana esta rellena de nuestra inigualable carne mechada sofrito con queso cheddar viejo y La Sofia está rellena con nuestras caraotas (frijoles negros), plátanos fritos, aguacate en rodajas y queso feta (o tex-mex vegano).

Son opciones que esperamos que siempre te hagan saborear, disfrutar cada bocado y tomarte un momento para absorberlo todo.

“A ponerse alpargatas que lo que viene es joropo.”

Impossible to translate directly so here it is…
[Put on your dancing shoes, that a party is coming!]

This saying may require a bit of a lesson. “Alpargatas” are special shoes in Venezuela used commonly to dance one of our national dances, Folklore.

Now this is a popular saying that tells us to get ready for the high energy dance that’s coming, serious, difficult things for which to be ready for. It is an alert for the future.

Considering this is the last week of this unique year, we are filled with resilience and ready to dance to whatever tune the DJ may choose for us!

Now let us feed you this week and help us wrap up this year with a bang!

🇨🇦 Arepa Lovers, today we would like to wish you all Merry Christmas!!

Regardless of your religion, beliefs or culture the red and shiny lights everywhere should make even the biggest grinch smile 😊. We see again the uncertainty and the restrictions upon us and we (yet again!) reflect and ponder about all that we have to be grateful for. Even if our big family Christmas dinners had to be adapted/cancelled/postponed, nothing will ever be able to extinguish the power of those things that really matter!

🇨🇦 Today’s Arepa Story is for Benjamin!

Ben came when he saw a new sign outside. He spoke to us in Spanish and shyly apologized for it. We let him know his Spanish was great and he could come practice with us anytime! His first order was The Camila and some Yuca fries. He has since always tried to order something different, but has never betrayed his loyalty to The Camila. He suffered during our Yuca hiatus and has since never passed out on those, affirming their power as they were his fuel during a hike once! Benjamin came to say good bye before he heads to warm, salty and delicious Costa Rica. We will so miss his kind visits!

🇻🇪 ¡La Arepa Story de hoy es para Benjamin!

Ben llegó cuando vio un nuevo letrero afuera. Nos habló en español y se disculpó tímidamente por ello. ¡Le hicimos saber que su español era excelente y que podía venir a practicar con nosotras en cualquier momento! Su primer pedido fue La Camila y unas yucas fritas. Desde entonces, siempre ha intentado pedir algo diferente, pero nunca ha traicionado su lealtad a La Camila. Él sufrió durante nuestra escasez de Yucas y desde entonces nunca falla en ordernarlas, afirmando su poder ya que una vez hasta fueron su único combustible durante una caminata! Benjamín vino a despedirse antes de dirigirse a la cálida, salada y deliciosa Costa Rica. ¡Extrañaremos mucho sus cordiales visitas!
